By that logic literally everyone should be spellcasters.
If anyone can perform the instructions of a ritual, and ritual is a separate design space that uses Ability Checks to determine success (or failure, or fumble), then every one can have access to magic. It would work similar to acquiring a magic item.

replace Wis with prof bonus and its good to go.
If a Ranger has a mundane version of Cure Wounds, why would one replace Wisdom for it? Wisdom is the Medicine skill. I would expect it to enhance a treatment for wounds, and enhance a stimulant for energy and alertness.

Detect Poison and Disease: You may use Medicine to determine what if food or drink is infected with a poison or disease. The DC to determine such is equal to the saving throw of the disease or poison. This is a passive check for any food or drink you are personally handling.

Also, I'm just using the names of the spells. Will change them to more woodcrafty names later. For example, Cure Wounds is now Balm Wounds.

then make it a medicine roll.
1 min treatment:
1d6+wis heal,
roll 15, add +1d6
every 5 pts over 15, add +1d6
might convince someone to take expertise in Medicine for 1st time in history.

And yet it is something causing disagreement. You want it gone completely. Others want it tweaked one way, while others have different suggestions. It's just a good example of how hard it is to get this right.

Anyway, I have no attachment to Goodberry one way or another. It was just the first example that came to mind.

I don't have a problem with tweaks. Pointing out Goodberry is a problematic spell and bad game design is to point out that its effects shouldn't have any bearing on how an alt-Ranger is designed.

Goodberry the mechanic is not good whether its a class ability or a spell. (Much like how Natural Explorer is criticized for turning off game mechanics; which isn't what NE actually did but even so

If you were a Ranger in a DND world, wouldnt you learn spells to make your very hard life a bit easiet? Tbh, rangers as half casters makes the MOST sense. If Aragorn could learn conjure volley, you can bet he would lol

Ie, the make everyone spellcasters argument because the the game designers presented a world where not being a spellcaster is idiotic.

If anything, a ranger ought to be able to get mystical woodland beings to cast spells on their behalf. Being a fairy whisperer makes more sense than shooting vines out of their hands.

It can mean any character can try make a Wisdom (Medicine) Check to apply a Cure Wounds effect.

I am ok with this.

Certain simple spell effects, including Cure, Charm, Fear, Detect Poison, Detect Disease, Create Food and Water, and so on, should be available via ability checks.

How about a Hunting and Foraging minigame that blends seamlessly into your travel sequences and helps you level up your character?
They say Survival to limit your suffering is 'seamless', so I'll believe it when I see it. PCs tend to just eat the mosnters from the random encounters that are the other tedious part of the exploration pillar.
