What was the first monster you killed in D&D?

My Dwarven Fighter killed a giant spider....

I didn't pick up on the irony until many years later.

My dad ran my first D&D game for myself and my brother, using the old red basic set. I played a cleric and rolled 1 hp, but since it was just a game it didn't even occur to me to whine about it. My brother was a fighter. We encountered an Ogre and managed to kill it, but then we ran into a couple kobolds and they managed to hit me... one dead cleric, coming up.

Carrion Crawler...you know, the one waiting in the pit in the first adventure in the Dungeon Master's Book in the Red Box, on the way to the old castle? That one.

Haha, seems quite a few of us cut our teeth on the red box. I too began my killing of heinous monsters with that unfortunate carrion crawler. My brother played a stout dwarf and I an elf. He gave the carrrion crawler a rough time with his battle axe only to be paralyzed, and then I finished the monster off with my last (only?) magic missile. *Sigh* Those were the days...

I guess a troglodyte, and I guess I was a Cleric. I'd like to say I don't remember because it was 15 years ago and I was still in elementary school, but it's actually because D&D was not my first roleplaying experience. My first exposure to roleplaying was through Shadowrun, and I do vividly remember my first game and first kill in that game, a thug on a fire escape who was part of a gang hitting up our characters for money.

Four of us played in a booth at a McDonalds, using convenient props to represent the alley where the combat took place and white pipped dice to represent the players. It was difficult to keep the fire escape thug on a level above the rest of us, the Shadowrun book kept getting passed around the table because everyone wanted a look at it, and the slightest brush would take the die off its perch, so I killed him to make things easier. With an Ares Predator.

Some ten years later I was confronted in an art class by someone who remembered me from that day in McDonalds, and questioned me about what we had been doing hiding behind chicken nugget boxes and talking about shooting people. I tried to explain about roleplaying games, but he was only interested in ousting me as a lunatic, and it was all pretty awkward.

Pretty sure it was goblins, but it was a looong time ago - 27 years and five months so my memory is understandably cloudy.

I was playing an elven thief in 2E in a friend’s homebrew. A whole pack of the stupid things treed me while I was walking alone in the woods and I was only managed to kill 1 with a shortbow. I remember thinking I wasn't going to survive very long if the wolves were that much tougher than a 1st level thief.

That character ended up getting killed by a "dark elf" named Dalamar - chain lightninged twice.

I started with Dragonlance...

I primarily fought hobgoblins at that time but they had some allies of others races too. So it probably was a hobgoblin but I can't say for sure that my very first kill wasn't one of the hobgoblins' allies instead.

It was the D&D Red Box, finnish edition. I remember a carrion crawler, kobolds .. and a zombie. I'm pretty sure I killed a zombie, or thats the first I remember. I rolled a 20. Or maybe thats why I remember the zombie, maybe not because it was the first

I remember being in awe of the more veteran players:

Veteran: "I reach into the fireplace .."
DM: "You find a Silver Dagger!"
Me: "That was so neat! How did you know something was going to be in the fireplace?"
Veteran: "This is the 3rd time I've played this place."
DM: "Yup. Its the only adventure I've got."



I was confused because the DM didn't speak very clearly and I mixed up the finnish words for "armor" and "glove" (haarniska and hanska). "Whats my glove class got to do with enemies striking me?!?" Oh well. That was like '88 or '89
