What would be the speed of...

Elchaim

First Post
this character:

Dwarf Barbarian wearing dwarven plate and boots of striding and springing? My player seems to think his movement is 55 ft. Is this right? I thought the calculations would be the following:

Dwarf +20 ft.
Fast movement +10 ft.
x2 for boots of striding and springing (60 ft. so far...)
x2/3 for reduction from armor
Total : 40 ft.

If this equation isn't right, could someone please direct me to the proper one. Please and Thankyou!

Heh. I think your player is saying "A dwarf goes from 20' to 15' in armor, so that means the armor slows me down by 5'. 20', + 10' for barbarian, doubled for boots, -5' for the armor, is 55'."

But he's wrong.

40ft. sounds right to me.

Dwarf: 20 ft.
Dwarven Plate: -- > 15 ft.
Barbarian: +10 ft. --> 25 ft.
Boots of S&S: x2 --> 50 ft.

The bonus to speed for being a barbarian is always +10 ft, regardless of what armor he's wearing. A player once brought this question to me and asked "if I put on the armor first and then the boots, will my speed be higher than if I put on the boots first and then the armor?"

I think the changes are (at least in this case) applied in this order:

mundane first - base speed, and armor penalty
then [ex] - barbarian movement
then [su] - none here
then magical - boots

I disagree.

The barbarian's speed is 10' faster than the norm for his race.

A dwarven barbarian's speed is therefore 30'.

A character with a speed of 30' in medium armor moves at 20'.

Boots double that to 40'.

It's a question of whether a barbarian's fast movement is a bonus to base speed, or effective actual speed. From the PHB it's unclear, but the Wizards website lists it as this:

Fast Movement: The barbarian has a speed of (+10 ft. for his race) when wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor (and not carrying a heavy load).

The quote's from a character close-up, so it's not official I guess, but it does seem to support your contention that the bonus is to his base speed. I'd like to see the charts on various movement-related things like monk speed and speed-in-armor expanded to include 40, 50 and 60 ft base speeds. I bet those tables are in Savage Species.

A question about the same topic

We had a similar question last night...

Elf rogue in leather armor with boots of striding and springing

In one round the character ran 240 feet and our DM allowed it!

Elf base 30 feet
Run (x4) = 120 feet
Boots (x2) = 240 feet

Is this correct?

Other way around, actually... 30ft, x2 for Boots = 60ft speed. Run action lets you move four times your speed.

240ft. is correct.

Same character same night...

That makes sense.
Double the "normal" first

That same character also performed a double move out of a threatened square to avoid an Aoo at 120 feet.

Is this O.K. also?

Thanks

I guess our DM was correct then... (O Wise One)

That's a preety nice item. I will have to get my druid a pair.

Just out of curiosity since we are on the topic, what would the limit on the jump distance be if the boots remove the height restriction?
