What would be your be all end all roleplaying game?

Well if you mean existing systems..

I really like CoC (BRP), Runequest 2, Earthdawn, Lejendary Adventure, D6 Star Wars and OD&D. Those are my fave systems

If I had to use one system only for all Genres...yikes..BESM.....D20...I don't know....

If I had to pick only one game to play forever...probably OD&D...there's a ton of OAD&D and AD&D 2E material that is easily converted...

My be-all end all game that does not exist but I want it to would probably be a D&D ruleset that used the core D20 system but that is less rules intense...something less rigid and less structured with lots of plug ins for added complication if needed/wanted...cross the D20 core mechanic with the "playability" of Lejendary Adventures.

I would have to say.. that now for me.. it is Mutants & Masterminds.. it is just so flexible.. whilst not being bent out of shape. (I know what I mean). My previous fav system was Rolemaster.. finding a DM was always hard.. I am rather interested in what the "new" I.C.E is going to do. (it was resurrected recently by some dude)

but.. M&M is my game. JeffB.. you should check it out.. it might fit your needs.

A pen and paper version of the MUD DragonRealms... but most likely the rules would be too complex for casual play and involve way to many tables for my liking.

G'day

I don't think that there could be a single setting that would do all and be all for me, because I like to vary genres from game to game. Some campaigns are hard SF, some are Space opera, some are near future, some are historical, some are contemporary, some are high fantasy, some are fantasy tropes on historical settings.

The game system that could do all and be all for me would have to be able to handle all those different genres without problems, and it would need to cover chase sequences, social interaction, stealth, shadowing, infiltration and patrolling, seduction, persuasion, dissimulation, fire combat, melee combat, sacerdotal magic, thaumaturgical magic, and animistic magic, some kung-fu-movie ch'i abilities and mystical disciplines, climbing, spaceship combat, and a whole bunch of other things like that, not just combat, and preferrably all with a single resolution mechanic. I find that ForeSight (together with its fantasy supplement HindSight) just about fits the bill. That is the game I play most often, though I sometimes wander off to try something else, or use eg. 'RuneQuest' for a special purpose.

Agback

My group and I are really getting into Alternity. We like most of the aspects of it. If there were some reforms for melee combat I think I would switch to that exclusively.

I want something between D&D and Tunnels and Trolls in terms of simplicity and something between D&D and GURPS in terms of realism. I still haven't found that "magical" set of RPG rules that has these issues perfectly balanced. Until then...D20 will do just fine thank you!
