What would you play?

What D&D editions would you play?

I would play any of those in the group I am in. I certainly have preferences to one system or the other - but if I am to be a player and someone wants to run something in one of the above systems I would play.

Hypothetically I would play nearly any D&D game with my friends if they wanted to play.

Of course the hypothetical chance of my friends wanting to play almost nothing on that list are so small I would vote for someone passing weem in xp first.

You realize there is something wrong with the development of the core game when the most popular choice is "Various OGL/d20 3rd Party Games". Of course, this includes Pathfinder, which many people today feel IS the core development of the game.

This does not indicate anything "wrong", unless you think the sample of folks answering the poll are representative of the market in general. There are a long list of reasons to expect this is not true of polls on EN World, and this poll in specific.

So, please, folks, stop trying to use these results to take pot-shots at games. It makes you look... well, like someone who either does not understand statistics, or is willing to ignore how statistics work in order to make their point.

I picked the one system that I'd really want to play in but I'd at least give another system a try if my friends really wanted to.

I am opened to playing everything on the list with the exception of 4E.

I might consider 4E if I knew the DM well and knew him to be a great DM.

But I would try and talk them into running something else first.

As a DM I would be most comfortable running 3.0/3.5 or a clone but if there was enough interest I would be willing to try and run one of the older editions.

I can only think of one or two RPGs on the market that I wouldn't play. Even if one of my friends was gung ho about running a Skills & Powers AD&D 2e game, I would still play it! Am I crazy? Maybe! :D

I will join the chorus: play, without constraints: all of the above.

DMing in real life: 4E. If I could get others to go along, 4E or my own, depending.

Must spread around rep before giving to Crothian, etc.

Yes. "Anything, dependent on who's running" is the answer. I would probably prefer some games over others if we're talking a long haul of a campaign, but yeah, give me good friends who enjoy the game and it'll be a blast.

I read the question in the opposite direction. More that you pick the game, and whatever you pick your friends will go along with, so what do you pick?

If it were my choice I'd pick about a dozen games before I even got to a version of D&D. Of the D&D games I would either go 1e to go through some of the great modules, 2e to play in some of those cool settings, or Pathfinder to enjoy an Adventure Path.

You wouldn't find me DMing OD&D, 1E or 4E. You could get me to play any of them, though I'd still be reluctant to be on the player's side of the same editions above.

What's more important is the people you're playing with, as others have said.

Now this makes me curious, Stormonu. The link in your .sig points me to a 520 page document of homebrew 4e stuff and you wouldn't DM and only reluctantly play it? What has happened?

I voted 3.5, 4e, and d20/3rd Party. Pathfinder is pure awesome, and I might not ever go back to 3.5 as a result.

I alos tried to play a 2e game last year with a group of friends. The DM promised me a role-playing adventure which turned out to be the DM throwing whatever cool monster he found in the old books just to see what they did... and had one player not played the most tricked out Elven Bladesinger, we wouldn't have won any of the fights. That, plus the terrible lack of clerical healing on the Cleric spell list really turned me off once and for all.

Despite all that fiddling to get the game where I wanted it to be, it just never clicked with me.

If I can choose what we're playing, it's going to be 4e or Star Wars Saga or Mutants & Masterminds. But I'd play almost anything if that's what a group I liked wanted to play, even if I'd grumble at least a little about pre-3e D&D.

I'd play just about anything, with three exceptions: 3.0, 4.0, and SW Saga.

3.0 because I've played too much 3.5, so my rules intuition would get in the way.
4.0 because I don't think that edition sounds fun.
SW Saga because I find some of the rules quirks really annoying. I'd give it another shot with a few house-rules though.

I'll play anything my friends want to as well. My only problem is that I'm pretty much the only one in my current group who's like that.

Also, I'd enjoy DMing/GMing pretty much any RPG including all the ones on the list.
