Whatcha Reading? (In August)

For myself, at the moment I'm reading Tales from the Great Turtle, an anthology of fantasy stories inspired by and in the style of Native American myths, edited by Piers Anthony* and Richard Gilliam. .

Neat. There is a really excellent Abanaki museum in NY Adirandaks I have visited at least twice now that dedicate an entire floor to the Turtle legend. It is near Howe's Caverns (another excellent place to visit).

I've read a lot of Butcher but not Side Jobs. Any good?
My wife didn't like it, my friend who got me into Dresden loves it. I haven't started it yet because other "real books" keep getting in the way, but I'm a big fan of short stories, so I suspect I'll enjoy it.

Catching up on some David Gemmell, who (despite me voraciously reading fantasy since elementary school) I've managed to pretty much miss. I've only read two or three of his books in my life.

Just read Waylander, which I have to admit I found wanting. But I've liked the other stuff of his that I've read in the past, so I intend to keep going.

Gemmell is definitey one of my favourites -- there are two other novels about Waylander -- both were better than Waylander itself.

His psuedo-historicals aren't bad --- but my personal favourites are "Morningstar" and then stepping out of the fantasy realm a bit into the post-apocalyptic are the Jon Shannow novels (3 of them)

Currently reading [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Swords-Dark-Magic-Sword-Sorcery/dp/B0057DCOH2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312670068&sr=8-1]Swords & Dark Magic: The New Sword and Sorcery: Jonathan Strahan, Lou Anders: Books[/ame] . Mixed bag of stories, with a new Elric tale by Moorcock with the right amount of weird thrown in. Best one I've read so far is Scott Lynch's story about a bunch of apprentice mages entering a library to... return a book, with some highly original creations. Joe Abercrombie's story here has been much praised but doesn't quite strike me as anything special.

That sounds interesting. I much prefer weird in my sorcery to explosive fireballs. And I used to like Moorcock stories a lot, but haven't read any in a long time.

Just finished Ghost Story by Butcher. Just about what I expected, and was much fun to read.

Read a Juv/YA fantasy called The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne Valente. Generally I love pseudo-fairytales, but this just struck me as overcute and contrived. Too bad, because I really wanted to enjoy it.

And I just started Sidekicks by Jack Ferraiolo. Also YA. Superhero's sidekick is sick of the gig and wants to have a life of his own... can he? So far, quite funny and smartly sarcastic.

I'm reading the second Omnibus regarding Ciaphis Cain. It's a Warhammer 40k book. About halfway done. No idea what I'm gonna read next.
