Whats a reasonable AC at 10th level?

By my experience, the average AC at 10th level is probably in the lower to mid 20's depending on class and role. A dwarf knight /dwarven defender with good armor and shield will probably be at least AC 32, while a wizard without buffs will probably be only 18 or so.

Is there a math problem with this AC, Dex 14 should be +2, the PAIMON thing also +2, and is the gloves +2 to Dex, or +2 to AC.

Also what is the max combined Dex bonus for a Mithril Shirt?

Summation is this accually around 23 or 24 AC.

By the evidence presented here the formula for a melee fighter should be 15 + 2xAPL. The monsters are gaining about 2 a level, and so your AC should gain about the same. Of course, you have more hp, but they hit harder and more often.

AC30 at APL10 is getting a bit fragile.

My Halfling Archivist in Shackled City has had 26 AC unbuffed since level 5, more if she bothers to buff, but she isn't typical. We had a thread a while back where I did some calculations about 'respectable' AC. Lemme see if I can find it...

EDIT: Appears to have died in the crash

My Dex is 22 (14+2+4+2) [tieflings get +2 racial to dex], giving +6 to AC which is, as javcs said, the max dex bonus on a mithral shirt.

In my experience even with an AC of character level + 20 you'll get hit pretty regularly. It is somewhat dependent on the enemies you encounter, e.g. it gets worse if you often encounter giants or advance creatures. The latter are especially bad - the CR increase doesn't accurately reflect the increased combat capability, imho.

Without good buffs and/or natural armor there's simply no way to get an armor class that will really make you 'hard to hit'. BUT: It does help to reduce taking insane amounts of damage from power-attacking 2h weapon wielders.
