What's the big stink about Rappan Athuk Reloaded?

JRR,

Normally I wouldn't do this but since Orcus/Clark is getting flak, I'm all for it:

Box set, with three books, 1 full of rendom encounters for both inside and outside the dungeon, (wilderness stuff), another with a new set of levels (giving it a grand total of 36 levels), plus much better maps! :) Fold maps man. I don't see how you can pass this up.

Well, I doubt I'll get to use it again for a while, my group went through thr whole thing a few years back, I dunno if I want to spend 70 bucks for one book of new levels. I already had random encounters and wilderness encounters from Necros product downloads, plus MoAT. I'll probably wait and try and snatch a copy off EBAY in a few years.

Most famous dungeon? Surely that is a jest.

No. It isn't a jest. I own every bad *ss module ever published and Rappan Athuk is the king! Better than Tomb of Horrors, better than Lost Caverns of Tsojanth, Better than Expedition to Barrier Peaks, better than Temple of Elemental Evil, Better than the Bloodstone Mines series, better than Shackled City, it is THE BEST!! You had better know when to run!

Dungie rules!!

Tomb of Abysthor is darn good too!

I don't know about most famous, I've never done a survey, but most feared? You bet! At least in my group, it is.

Quoted for truth. Rappan Athuk delivered the only TPK my college gaming group ever had. I think they made it down to the second level before the black skeletons butchered them. Good memories. :D

EDIT: I just wanted to ask this, though I'm sure it's been brought up before. The original RA series had a truckload of web enhanced material. Is all of that going to be in RARE also?

I don't think there is a big stink per se, it's just some people don't like the idea of limited edition products, especially when it's a very desireable product and thus they will miss out if they can't pre-order (especially as its a very very costly product). Sour grapes is a key component - people want something, but cannot get it.

Famous, eh? I've never heard of it, or ever heard anyone mention anything about it before. Was it primarily a convention game or something?

And feared...? Well, I may have to buy it and see. Maybe. ;)

I bought the first one, didn't care for it. Necromancers style is not to my liking, though it's got plenty of fans. I'd definetly advise buying one of the cheaper adventures before you spend money on Reloaded.

As for "famous and feared", it's famous in it's circles, but overall it's no more known than lots of lesser products. I mean, if it was so famous, the demand would far outstrip 1000 copies.

I really liked RA1 & RA2, I never could find RA3 though. I made the mistake of telling my players about a few things in there before playing. They refused to play after they actually saw the stats for the mutated killer mimic. To this day I can put the fear in them by flipping through its pages.
