What's the DC for pulling free from manacles?

As you say, there are rules for using Strength or Escape Artist to get out of manacles. There are no by-the-rules bonuses for suffering injury or a handicap while doing so -- in fact, there are only the sketchiest of rules for any handicaps in the first place. Presumably the normal Escape Artist/Strength checks result in painful scrapes and cuts that are not life-threatening (no hit point damage).

As DM, I would not give any bonus for this situation. As you say, magical healing is so commonplace it would really just be a "free" bonus anyway.

I'm just wondering if the Str DC would be lower than the break DC. Flesh does give much sooner than iron or steel.

Maybe a -1 to the DC for every 2 points of damage you take? Have a Fort save of 12 + the hp damage taken to suffer from dislocation?

Agreed. Wanted to see if their were official rules before I moved on. Got ahead of myself.

He should have to make a Will save first, too. The body is loathe to harm itself, and he should need to overcome that. I'd say DC12 to 14 or so, +5 for each retry.

These are PC heroes, here. They stick their heads in literal and figurative guillotines every day. Suddenly requiring them to make a Will save to exert extra force just doesn't make sense.
