^ lol. we usually get together on saturdays, butr most of the time we play it online. It's pretty easy to make it work:

when it's character dialog you put a * - * before your sentence
you use your chara's name on your nickname
when your character does something, you just write it
when you want to make an off-play comment, you write it inside ( )

quite easy

We do something similar.
- In-character speaking is in between " " (i.e., "Lord Joh, why have you sent for us?")
- In-character actions are in between :: :: (i.e., ::Move 10', attack the ogre with my sword:: )
- Anything out-of-character is in between (( )) (i.e., ((I need a bio break, can we take 5?)) )

And anything telepathic is between @@ @@

I'm a Fantasy Grounds shill now. Me and my players went ahead and bought it, and we've all been very impressed with the software. The thought of going back to OpenRPG makes me grimace, although the fact that OpenRPG is free is always a good point.

P.S: A friend and I are currently working on a online combat grid, but it's taking a while due to our national exams.

If all you want is the grid, why not use virtual gametable?

it has something most of the other suggested programs lack: It's FREE!

Learning curve is non-existent. Drag & drop hallways and room sections, or just doodle straight to the battlemap with the pen feature. all players can see it. There's also "pogs" of heroes and monsters (with a pog template so you can upload your own art and adapt it)

Just be careful, there's a version 1.1 and a 1.2, they aren't compatible (for some reason) but 1.2 is much more stable, so I use that preferentially.

I used Fantasy Grounds for a time when I wasn't in a group, DM'ing for a pick-up group. I was very impressed with the ease of use both as a DM and as a player, the feel of the software is much more like a tabletop game as well, with animated dice rolling on the screen (you could even spin your dice if you knew the trick *nice easter egg*).

Maps are just added as added using most image formats, jpg, gif, etc. Lots of things were customizable if you knew a little bit of XML, right down to the appearance on screen.

Very simple to use with it's radial menu structure, and hotkeys.
