When were you hooked?

when did you finally realize you were hooked on "the game"?

i have seen many threads on burnout and boredom and frustration... i think it might be beneficial if we all took a moment to remember( if we can) that moment when you knew this crazy, time-consuming, somewhat expensive, and oft scorned hobby(read: habit ) had its hooks in you.

for me, it was at age 13.i was painting an ettin mini, and realizing i was spending significantly more time preparing than participating....

(yes, i know preparing is participating, but you know what i mean)

Well hard to split the moment I started playing and the moment I was hooked... I guess most got hooked right away ? Any one took some years to get addicted ?

I started playing very late and so didnt have those night long teenage RPG romps... :( 20 years of age I started... got hooked soon after.

Before I even played for the first time.

I looked into the back of my dad's red Basic D&D book, where they had a couple of maps of a crumbled keep. Ever since I saw that, I've wanted to play.

I went on holiday to Orlando. We went in to some weird shopping center.
I bought a Greenday T shirt and the 3rd Edition Players Handbook. This was before the other two books were out.
It was about $20.

I read the book cover to cover before I went home. While wearing my new t shirt. I was quite obsessed.

'83. I was 8, and saw a box labelled "Dungeons & Dragons, Basic Set" in the aisles of Gemco. I had no idea what it was, but I knew I HAD to have it. When I opened it up, I had no idea what a "Dungeon Master" was, but I knew I HAD to be one.

That was then, this is now... :p

Like LostSoul said "before I even played for the first time".

We had just moved to a new town, and close to our new home was a scifi bookstore, that had some D&D stuff.

I went in, hooked to SF as I was, and looked at all the minis and strange books they had and thought "Wow!".

I asked the guy at the counter what it all was (this "dnd" like it said all over the place) and he gave me the adress to a gaming club. Never even aswered my question, he just sighed and said I could ask them.
He was a strange figure. (And just one of the two owners. The other is more congenial.)

I was completely hooked, I had no choice in the matter. I was almost twelve and it was in -79.

When I Got Hooked

It was Junior High back in '83 in Salt Lake City of all places (my dad had been transferred there for work). A bunch of friends had gotten me hooked on Conan and on comic books, and they mentioned playing a game called D&D. I borrowed some of their books and asked my mom to buy me the basic set for a present (the purple basic set w/ the Erol Otus cover). Within a year I had the Players Handbook, a bunch of Dragon Magazines, and some modules. I was hooked enough that after I'd stopped gaming, I still picked up a bunch of 2E products just to read them, and finally got back into gaming with 3E (as both player and DM).
