Most rental stores don't actually have many classics. It's like 90% new releases, 5% the dvds you can get for $6 at Best Buy, and 5% assorted stuff. Occasionally they have gems, but it's a crapshoot.

This is why having Blockbuster snarf up all the local mom-and-pop rental places sucks. They only stock the new movies (like 20 copies of each!). That's why I'm addicted to netflix. I would have never seen great movies like Nine Queens or Run Lola Run otherwise.

Plus you can dig up these oldies. I was surprised, though. No African Queen! Is it not on DVD?
