First Post
I was thinking about all of the places that I've run and played in games, and I wondered what sort of experiences others have had with this.

I think I've done my best gaming (as a DM) in the University of Michigan Student Union -- a semi-public place according to the poll. The Union has a basement-level eating/gathering area, with several restaurants for munchies, large tables, bathrooms, and plenty of out-of-the-way places to game. I ran my longest-running FR campaign there, and it was a great location (not perfect sometimes, but good overall).

Don't get me wrong: I like gaming at home, too -- it's a good default option, and all of my books are near at hand -- but I sometimes find it easier to concentrate when no one is in a totally familiar setting.

I picked "other" simply because it really depends.

As a DM, I'd say most of my good games come from home--not that I have all that many good games at home... but what can I say, i'm not that great of a DM.

As a player, I've definately had the most fun up at my FLGS, Games Plus (home of all of the chicago game days). People like Mark, Piratecat, and William Ronald are absolutely fantastic GMs--hell I'd call them GMing IDOLS :D-- and the people you get to game with from the boards are extremely friendly. Once again, I love ENWorld... :)

Other. Because I do my best roleplaying here on the boards. Well, technically that's still my room, but I think it warrants the 'other' option.

Shoot. I should have thought to include an online/PBeM option -- that's a pretty big omission. :o

Should any moderator happen to see this thread and take an interest -- and deem it appropriate -- I think it would be great to slot in another poll option: "Online/PBeM." Thanks in advance. :)

At home, of course!

I chose the first answer, because I'm such a homebody. I love my 'ome. It's got a nice big table upstairs. And a nice little room downstairs, in case we can't play upstairs. And if we can't play in the little room, hey, it's not too difficult cramming five guys into my tiny bedroom. :D

I'ld have to say I do my best gaming at conventions, everyone is strangers so there is very little OOC conversation about what folks have been doing that week. People haven't been gaming together for ages so 'war-stories' rarely crop up and even if they do they don't go on as long as nobody expands on the events as they weren't there.

Characters have a predefined background which is all the players have to go on so they tend to get in character quicker and stay in character.

As a DM you don't have to worry about killing off any characters as it won't upset the campaign as its only a one off senario. Players also don't feel as bad about losing a character, so tend to be more daring and heroic.

That's not to say I don't enjoy RPG at home and I haven't had great games at home. Plus at home you can build a great story, epic campaign's deep characters and massive campaign settings.

Hmm I suppose that's another thing I like about convention gaming its just the players some dice and a character sheet, and maybe a rulebook.

No getting out of character to look up rules or tables in books.

Location is not an isue. As long as it's relativly comfortable and the game is not constantly interupted I don't realy care where I play. A more important factor is the group and the DM! A DM that is capable of presenting a good story with appropriate action and a bunch of players that respond "in character" to the action inspire me lots more than environment.

I also tend to not be as impressed with environment embelishment. Handouts and maps and stuff are fine and add to the game, but DM's that go over the top with special background music, candles, .... tend to overdo and therefore distract...
