Where does arcane magic come from?

Personally I see Divine as being a part of the gods. Basically the gods are giving part of themselves to the cleric. The cleric then forms that into whatever spell they are trying to cast.

Arcane magic is a natural force of the universe. Wizards learn to manipulate it through complex formulas and ritual and Sorcerers natural manipulate this force of the universe.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I was hoping more people would touch on my specific questions though. Its not just where does arcane magic come from. Its also the use of words and gestures and components and how that ties in. All very ritualistic things.

"In the beginning there was the Word.

It created the Heavens and the Earth, and echos through time and space to this very day.

Magic is speaking in Words that the Universe cannot ignore."

My take on it has always been this: magic exists as an energy force present throughout existance, much like gravity. Some people have the ability to control this energy, and what seperates them is how they draw upon that energy.

Psionicists draw upon the magical energy inherent in the (meta)human body, using their will to shape it into the force they desire. They are thus limited by how much of their natural magical energy they can concentrate in their body and use.

Arcane spellcasters draw energy from their surroundings. Through carefully crafted formulas (Mage) or sheer force of will & natural talent (Sorcerers), these people focus the magic around them and use it for their own ends.

Divine spellcasters use their faith to call upon their god (or nature itself) to grant them the spells they desire. Their faith and god dictates what they can do with the magic, but frees them from the reliance of internal energy or extreme study in magical arts.

Magic and Thimtona

In my campaign, Thimtona, arcane magic and sorcerous magic are different. Sorcerers are basically normal people who have somehow "contracted" magic. This can be transmitted by blood, magical radiation, or a bane place upon the PC. It asserts it self, coursing through their being. A wizard draws off free energy. The god of Magic, Albacto, taught other gods to use their minds to focus the free energy. Their minds are able to comprehend more, hence why they have more power. A wizard uses himself as a "bridge rectifier", he takes this energy and uses his brain to refine it through meticulous rituals (Somatic, Verbal, Materials).

This energy just is.

Personally I think that I follow the SL line. But then that's where I do a lot of my casting! ;)

Btw, I still think if your into gesturing, and complicated rituals, R&R is the best way to go about with the ritual magic section.
