D&D 4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

I mean, if a game can't be played and gamemastered under the heavy influence of alcohol, it's not worth my time.

While I phrase it this way for humorous effect, I'm deadly serious: my D&D time is a time for friends & family to wine, dine, and kill Orcs to take their pie.

complaint - system is too obtuse and distributed in resource use and lacking in skill examples for dms to make it fair regardless of their desire to do so - answer well go for it anyway.

There are only 6 numbers that the check can slot into, and the say yes philosophy lends a guiding hand.

The philosophy seems undermined by numbers. My fighter is getting some pretty measly percentage points advancement in athletics or history or anything really. The game seems to be saying no with its numbers. Its like you are shaking your head no while saying yes. And you as DM set the difficulty so high it really really is a no unless this has already hit the not really a problem stage, the message is really "you are wasting our time"... besides the spell caster will handle it without a check with his well defined capability.

The spellcaster won't always have the slot: it may be more reliable than taking a risk, but it is not always an option.

Too easy to make that risk disproportionate one way or another too easy to make it walk all over those well defined other abilities in the system or make those well defined abilities seem over important like a highly situational thing being treated as god like.

What's the worst that can happen?

We are talking about D&D you know horrific things happen. Apparently a non-caster gets to save their falling friend and a caster gets a wasted known spell or other class features are made useless (like the thieves raison d'etre back when it was a big deal that pick lock bit LOL
OR maybe whole classes get jack doodle for improved ability to perform in non-weapon bashing arenas because sacrosanct bounded accuracy is actually not so good in skills when you lack hit points to enable other advancement.

Just say no is OK as just a hidden part of that low number progression - the real philosophy is DM decides, not just say yes.

I would like to see more No But and Yes But elements going on to tell you the truth.
