Lawful Good.

For many people (me included), it's a roleplaying challenge; it represents the "shining knight" ideal, and in my experience it provides the most satisfying D&D experience...

IF...

... the DM and the other players are invested in letting the ideal play out.

Best alignment to be in real life? Neutral Good.

Best alignment for others to be (from your point of view)? Also Neutral Good.

Best alignment to play in D&D? Chaotic Neutral. It's more "neutral" than True Neutral! You get to do whatever you want, whenever you want, for any reason. From a powergaming perspective, you avoid the worst effects of the big bad spells like Unholy Blight.

Define consensus. ;)

Seriously, I don't think that there is a best alignment. It depends greatly on the person. For the most part, you aren't going to have too many "evil" alignments voted for as best, because not too many people are going to identify themselves with being evil. There may be some who look at it purely from a game standpoint, which doesn't reflect what you are after (if I understand your position).

My vote - Chaotic Neutral (but then again, I still have a bit of fickle left in me).

NG all the way. Playing D&D for me is always about being heroic, and Neutral Good is as heroic as it gets. Even in the Complete Book of Villains in 2e, there was a section on roleplaying villains of each alignment. LG was there, CG was there, but on NG Rick Swan had to throw in the towel: he couldn't make a convincing story for a NG character to be a BBEG (that is, for a good-aligned party, of course).

The most fun I've had in a long time playing D&D was a one-off game at a con where all of the characters were evil (CE and NE). It was very liberating. Muhahahhahahaaaa....

NG all the way.

I tried being evil once, but I just couldn't do it. I'd make a terrible assassin. :)

I tried being Lawful and it almost killed me (both in character and out). And Chaotic seems to imply that you just don't play by the rules ever, like you're always sticking it to the man in your own little way.

YMMV
