If we use WotC's 70% playtest rule, only the Fighter, Thief, Cleric and Wizard should be core classes in the next iteration of D&D. And I would be totally on board.
And it's perhaps worth noting that for all the gnashing of teeth about how lagging Fighters are and nearly always have been, they're still leading the poll. :)

The poll is what class should be core, not what class is good or well designed.

I know I voted Fighter on condition that it be done well this time.

It wouldn't be an effective trap choice if no one was ever caught by it.

People who want to play fighters whether they're balanced or strictly inferior, vote that it should be included.
People who want the fighter to be better vote that it should be included (it can't get better if its cut).
People who enjoy feeling superior to those who play fighters vote that it should be included.

Who votes against the fighter? Maybe if you're anti-traditionalist for it's own sake you vote against all the big 4?
