Which system for a Star Wars game?

Still around here guys and gals, work has just taken over this week… I did write the opening scroll to my version of Episode I that I will be running, regardless of what system we eventually decide upon.

jdrakeh, thanks for the Risus suggestion. I have read it but think it may be TOO simple for the group. I love storytelling and role playing and the group has a good balance of interests, but a good half of the guys like some more options when they play their characters.

One of my players threw a new option on the table (figuratively, we are non violent! Hahaha…). He suggested we use D20 Modern and the psionic powers in that book for the Jedi. While I have played D20 Moderns I have NEVER used the psionic rules. Off the top of my head they seem an ill fit. Your opinion?

Hope everyone is a slower week. Holidays are here but things are NOT slowing down.

The basic rules of psionics would work fine. You'd need to build / customize many of the powers as they were developed for a different milieu than Star Wars; if you were willing to do that work then the psychic powers of Modern would work fine.

One of the reasons I chose True20 for my Star Wars conversion was that all the powers I wanted and needed (except for super jumping) were already in the core book. Add in the facts that Jedi were inherently balanced against all other characters and that you can run a True20 party with characters at different levels without concern and the system does Star Wars beautifully.
Qui-Gon (at 12th level) can show up with Obi-Wan (at 8th level) to rescue the Queen (at fifth level) and her entourage (a mix of levels, some heroic and others minions), they can even hook up with some kid (at second or third level), and go off to save the galaxy with everyone still able to contribute effectively; unlike any other level-based system out there, or most of the point-based ones.

That said, make the choice that your players and you will be happiest with. Just about any system can run the game; as long as the mechanics don't get in the way of the fun, the system is sufficient.

Yeah, if your players really like mechanical crunch, Risus is not the game for you ;)

Your opinion?

I've never used the psionic rules although, theoretically, it should work.

If you have the d6 rules, go with those. An all-time great game. FWIW, d6 space is still in print by WEG, with all the Star Wars IP stripped out.

Which is what the real Jedi are.
Nope. Uber-Jedi is worse than Wu-Jedi (wuxia). ;)

d6 is Uber. d20 is Wuxia (about where Lucas kinda/sorta did in the PT).

Personally, I prefer Jedi-Geki or Sengoku-Jedi but Wu-Jedi is fine.

ORE? Never heard of that before… The options multiply! Hahaha!

All kidding aside I’ll take a look at that.

jdrakeh yeah the guys like a little bit of crunch. I think I have only two players who would go for the minimalist approach. I have gone rules light or no-rules for a couple of one night adventures, mostly horror, but I would like to sustain a campaign.

ValhallaGH I get what you say from True 20 but since I have never run it that is why I came to these parts to get some advice.

Of all the Jedi the one I am sure my mother would play are the Sudoku-Jedi.

Ashamedly, I dont understand these category of Jedi with the oriental references.

Proudly, I now own a copy of True 20. With some perusal, I can tell it's a viable option for SW as well ... sorta like an unleashed D20 style. I'm very curious about Valhalla's assertions on inherent balance as well, the ease of different levels in a party. I'm eager for elaboration on these while I read this system deeper.

Sunglar it's interesting that your player suggested Modern when the new SW edition is going to incorporate some features from that very game. The classes could work if you dont mind making new advanced classes for the SW theme. The psionics are OK, but I havent used them despite having run Modern and Future. Once again, doable if you dont mind conversion.

If they want something in D20 though, really it's just simpler to get the Revised SW Core rules which is made for ... you know ... Star Wars. :D Why does one player HATE it with a passion?
