While Spiderclimbing- Prone?

Quidam

First Post
While walking walls or the ceiling using the spell (and not the slippers which don't req hands to be free) are you considered prone, with the combat modifiers that that entails?

If not, is it possible become prone?

There is nothing in the description of spider climb to indicate that you are prone, or not prone, so I can only assume that it has no effect on your prone/not prone status. You can be tripped while spider climb is active, which could make for some interesting effects...

I'm pretty sure it is possible to become prone as a free action (fall over, or drop to your belly). I don't think it provokes.

what i thought

That's what I was thinking.

It seems to me that, since you seldom have to deal with melee attacks while spiderclimbing, the +4 AC vs ranged attacks being prone gives you is well worth it.

That must be a house rule, because there's nothing in Prone that covers that.

To the contrary, the combat modifiers table states -4 penalty to melee attacks, and -3:3 Most ranged weapons can’t be used while the attacker is prone, but you can use a crossbow or shuriken while prone at no penalty.

My thought when I read that, was can a caster (or warlock) make ray or ranged touch attacks, from prone at all? It says most can't be, and clears crossbow and shuriken. It seems you can't make ranged attacks. I would guess you could still target spells that don't requre attack rolls.

A ray is not a ranged weapon, it's a spell. Being prone forbids using ranged weapons, not ranged attacks.

I agree that its a spell, but I think its also considered a weapon. It is my understanding that one could take the feat Weapon Focus (ray).

Being prone does not forbid using ranged weapons. The SRD states: "Most ranged weapons can’t be used while the attacker is prone, but you can use a crossbow or shuriken while prone at no penalty."
