D&D General Who is this made for (Not Beginners) - the New D&D Starter Set

I'm curious about it because it will serve as the first RPG experience for a lot more people than any game I would play. The same reason I express interest in 5.5 (a game I have no desire to play personally, but which nonetheless strongly affects the community of which I am a part).
But you're not just learning about it or asking for information... you're commenting with no actual firsthand information or experience with it... you do this with D&D products all the time and its always just negativity.

Again, what? It's RIGHT THERE on the character sheet in a big red box. Like... how can you miss that? You're telling me that five adults, looking at sixteen class boards couldn't find that honking big box right next to your attack bonuses? Seriously? That's not people badwrongfunning you. That's incredulity that five adults had that much difficulty seeing something that's pretty easy to spot.
Not to mention... its called out to look there when attacking with a spell in the "Read Me First"... which I assume all the inexperienced players should have went over.

At this point it seems like everyone is going around in circles. @GreyLord doesn't like the Starter Set for whatever reason, so just let them be annoyed by it and they can use the original 5E Starter Set or Essentials Set going forward. They're just one person with a table of players who may or may not play D&D going forward. But so what? People bounce off of D&D all the time so who cares if this new Starter Set soured them on the game? They don't need to play it, and the "D&D community" doesn't lose anything if they don't, because that "community" is so large that no single individual or table can impact it. So why continue to argue about it?

I don't have much good to say about WotC's recent crop of products, true. I never pretended to have first-hand knowledge, but I also don't think I shouldn't be allowed an opinion because of that. Most of WotC's decisions lately are ones with which I disagree, so I think it's understandable the resulting products are not to my tastes. And if 5.5 didn't both have the vast majority of the industry in it's pocket and resemble my preferred game in many ways I would have no reason to talk about them. But of course they do and it does.

I just feel bad for the OP: they bought 4 or 5 starter sets (wowsa $$$) and everyone had a miserable time.

I'm glad that people are trying to point out constructive solutions. At worst other people will find that helpful.

Otherwise yeah this is just going around in circles, debating the merits of the game with some forum members who have a reputation for expressing their intense dislike for it. It's going nowhere.

Fair enough. I've only still been talking about this because people keep telling me my opinion is wrong and/or shouldn't be expressed (something I don't do to others as much as possible).

So you think having and voicing an uninformed opinion adds value to the conversation in some way? How exactly?

Nice to know folks aren't supposed to have opinions about stuff unless they've personally experienced (and in this case paid for) it. Videos, advertising copy and the testimony of others is meaningless, right?
