Why are you still here?

I think there are a few factors going on here that can explain why some people are posting in thread after thread about how they hate the upcoming changes. This isn't directed towards anyone in particular (I don't pay enough attention to names, except for where I really like the poster, to do that if I tried, to be honest), and most of the people posting in this thread aren't covered by this either - these reasons are really about the people mentioned in the parent post: those who have already decided that they will not purchase 4E.

I'd appreciate it if nobody took this route any further, please.

This thread has the greatest chance of success if people continue to talk about their own reasons, rather than make suppositions about other peoples reasons as you are doing here. Whether they are correct or not, it is likely to mischaracterise some people and possibly offend them without purpose in this sensitive area.

So no more speculation about other peoples thinking.

Thanks

I personally think the mature thing to do in those cases is to just walk away and let the other people have their fun.
You've managed to accuse anyone anti-4E posting here of immaturity, irrationality, not knowing what's good for them, having an agenda, and addiction, all in the one post.

Wow. Just, wow. And your solution is that any dissenter should just shut up and go away, so you don't have to read their words? I'm not sure you're in a position to be suggesting what is mature and what isn't. (And, failing that and it really bugging you, there's always the ignore feature. No-one's on my ignore list, never saw the need.)

I don't consider myself a delusional, immature, irrational, agenda-pursuing addict all of the time. I could come up with a list of what I consider your lot being, but I'm not so deluded as to think that people who don't agree with me are all deluded and irrational. That's not giving them enough credit.

I don't think you give people who disagree with you enough credit. I feel a bit sorry for you because Professor Oppov (Other Person's Point Of View) is a man who you don't seem to respect, and there's a lot to learn from him.

Does anyone else gets shades of "Road House" from Plane Sailing?

Call it curiosity. For those of you who have stated that you will not ever buy 4th Edition. Why are you still here? I don't mean on ENWorld, just the 4th Edition subforum.
Well, I certainly will not presume to speak on behalf of the others, but for my own part: a) I rarely am; and b) when I am, it's due to simple curiosity. Besides, who knows if something from 4e mightn't be useful for my 3e-based campaigns. I'm quite open to that possibility.

So, yeah. That.

Yep...and I have the sneaking suspicion the "not so nice" Plane Sailing might pop up here at some point. :\

The first is that with the advent of a new edition, discussions about exactly what D&D is suddenly came to the fore.
This has been a big one for me. Abstract and what some would normally call overly analytical discussions of some of the underlying mechanics and flavor of the game have gotten more play here than they do in most forums, and I like that sort of talk.

Thinking about it, I was won over by 4E so much more easily than by 3E and I think that's because 1. My players really want to play it, and 2. I never even played 3.5 and only own 3.0 books, so I don't have a large surplus of material that I would have to convert or put into storage. That's huge for a lot of people, and it should be.

Not to worry, though. Seems like the perfect opportunity to let that DM-curious player of yours step up and give it a try. If you aren't excited about running 4E, it might be fun to play in it. I think we'll be seeing quite a few new DMs pop up, which is great.

In the beginning I was curious about 4e, even if mostly to see what would be its failures. Now, I come here when I am in a surge of procrastination and have spent more than enough time on other forums. And sometimes I am in search of ideas for some other game houserule, and here is as good a place as any other to get new ideas.

For myself, I think others have nailed everything I would say:

1. For all my doubts, I hope that I am wrong. (Ari's comments help.)

2. Even if I am not wrong, there might be some good things to swipe for my homebrewed 3.x game. Some elements of my homebrew and 4e "reveals" are very, very, very similar, and I want to know if WotC has real improvements on these ideas.

3. By speaking up about concerns that I have, I am giving WotC a chance to address those concerns (either in this forum, or in the rules). Pointing out potential pitfalls now is better than pointing them out after the books have gone to the presses.

4. By speaking up about things that I don't like, I hope to influence either 5th Ed or companies like Green Ronin and Necromancer Games to address these concerns. It is fully possible that WotC could produce a 4e I've no interest in, but NG produces a supplement for 4e that changes the game into something I would enjoy.

5. The future of D&D affects me, whether I switch or not.

6. I expect that there will be some 4e products (such as adventures) that I can adapt to my game. Especially as I must already adapt adventures from 3e to my homebrew.

7. For a while there were no really good threads "living" on the General forum. Thankfully, this has changed in recent weeks.

8. Above all, I enjoy reading these tidbits....even the ones that don't meet with my personal approval.

EDIT: 9. Oh yeah, big on the "RPG theory" & "What makes D&D what it is?" talk, too.
