Why can't Sorcerors use Quickened Metamagic Rods?

Is there any reason that sorcerors have to take a full-round action to use a metamagic rod? From a logical perspective it makes no sense, even using the game designers own logic. Observe:

-1. If one prepares spells, one can prepare a metamagic spell. A metamagiced spell takes no longer to cast than normal.

-2. If one casts spells spontaneously, it takes longer to cast a metamagiced spell, because its harder to cast than a normal one. A spell that normally takes one action takes a full-round action.

-3. Metamagic rods allow you to cast a metamagic spell without preparation, and without using up a higher spell slot. By the above logic, it should take a full-round action. However, metamagic rods break the normal rules in more than a few places. Mainly for the Wizard's benefit.

It's inconsistant for it to be a full-round action for one character and a standard action for another. Since it basically allows characters to break the rules regarding metamagic feats, it should be consistant for all characters. Either it's a full-round action or it's not. As far as I can tell, it's just an arbitrary decision that screws sorcerors over even more than they already have been.

What would be so broken about allowing sorcerors to use quickened metamagic rods? Why must every advantage the sorceror has over the wizard be ruined by new wizard toys? Is there any good answer?

Quickening has always been the province of the prepared spellcaster, not the spontaneous one. You can house-rule anything you like using any justification, but I enjoy the differences between prep and spontaneous casters in 3E. What sorcerers lack in quickening they more than make up for in firepower.

Honestly, there is no good reason other than the fact that the rules seem to SAY that you can't.

If using the rod functionally is "free" in terms of spell slots and "free" in terms of the wizard's need to prepare the slot beforehand I don't see why it isn't also "free" in terms of the extra time the sorcerer needs.

I think the fault is in the rods.

Sorcerors are supposed to be better at metamagic, and then, here comes a rod that allows prepared spellcasters to cast spells with no level adjustment instantly.

I'm getting them houseruled so that it takes a full round action for prepared spellcasters to use them as well.
