D&D 5E Why choose a conjurer wizard over a druid?

If you enjoy the mechanic of summoning, pick the class that seems like the most fun.

If you believe your class underpowered to the extent that it is not fun, talk to your DM about adding some additional spells to the game to balance it up a bit. However, I have yet to find any efficiently built class/subclass combo in 5E that is not strong enough to enjoy and shine in their own special way.

The conjuration wizard represents the whole conjuration school of magic rather than just the summoning subtype. Minor Conjuration and Benign Transposition are both generally useful utility abilities that fit the theme.

And while they aren't the best at summoning that doesn't mean they are necessarily bad. My personal experience with Conjure Minor Elementals is that if you have time to cast it before a fight it's quite good even without any supporting abilities (I was a divination wizard). Dust Mephits are nothing to sneeze at!

Sadly, the earliest Conjurer Subclass abilities are not very supportive of the Summoner theme.
I’m pretty sure when Gandalf told Bilbo that he (Gandalf), was “no mere Conjurer of tricks”, Gandalf was referring to the Minor Conjuration ability.

Minor Conjuration does not scream Summoner. It screams the old tv show Mcgyver...how can I own this situation by using a particular item, is basically the premise of the show.

Likewise Benign Transportation, while cool, evokes the wizard class from the Gauntlet arcade game, not a Summoner.

A Shepherd subclass Druid, meanwhile has a summoning class ability at 2nd level, and all of the subclass abilities enhance summoning, not just the high level ones, like in the Conjurer subclass.

In terms of being able to summon creatures to do things for you, like a Summoner should:

Conjure Animals lets you summon 8 stirges, which could nest in your great cloak........
.......cause a Summoner has got to have a horde of blood thirsty beasts, like Shaft needs theme music.

Conjure Woodlands Creatures lets you summon 4 Sprites which is 4 Fly, Polymorph, and other spells, or 8 Boggerts, or 2 Quicklings ( which is 6 extra attacks at 8 points of avg damage for each attack). One can summon 1 Meenlock: with +6 Stealth, 120’ Telepathy and a weak paralyzing attack...a pretty decent scout.

You can also summon an automatically friendly Sea Hag and ask for an introduction to her coven. Iggwiliv, could of easily started as a Druid!

A 7th level upcast Conjure Fey, allows one to summon a Korred— which can summon an earth type elemental.

No Magic Circle and no Planar Binding spells on the Druid spell list is the major problem with the Druid.

Just like the Abjurer subclass does not capture the essence of a War Mage theme, so too does the Conjurer subclass miss the mark of detailing the flavor of the Wizard Summoner.

Thing is...conjuration is not just ''summoning creatures''. Its taking stuff from somewhere and manifesting it in another place. So a Conjurer isnt just a summoner, he's also master of the teleporting spells; he's also summoning objects to him like the ''houses spells'' (Mighty Fortress, Magnificent Mansion, Secret chest etc).
He's also summoning harmful objects like a flaming sphere, a fog cloud, a puddle of grease or a web.

So Minor Conjuration, as a lesser version of Drawmij's Instant Summon, and Benign Transposition, as a lesser Teleport, are right on theme.

And while Animate Death, Create Undead and Danse Macabre arent conjuration spells, they supplement quite well the wizard who wants to play pokemon trainer.

I'm sure we will someday have a ''summoning'' focused wizard, just like the War Wizard expend the damage dealing magic side to more than just the evoker.

I figure sooner or later the urge to make subclasses that are a little bit of other classes will lead to a chainlock-like School of Contracts wizard that will be a better summoner. In 4e, the invoker had a lot of summoning powers, so that might be a more focused version (and thus more acceptable) version of the wizard that gets a little cleric stuff. It could also be how they make the psychic wizard subclass distinct from the psychic class if the psychic wizard subclass focused on dragging horrors out of the Astral Sea or the Far Realm.

Quite.

If you want to create a character based on the idea of summoning NPC minions to fight for you it's hard to beat a shepherd druid.

The conjuration wizard IS NOT INTENDED TO BE THAT CHARACTER.

Here's a list of ''summoning-themed'' spells a wizard has. (not to say that the druid isnt a good summoner, its my favorite class, but I think the wizard makes for a better summoner).

Dancing Lights
Unseen servant
Floating Disk
Find Familiar
Flock of Familiars
Earthen Grasp
Galder's Tower
Animate Death
Tiny Hut
Summon Lesser Demon
Arcane Eye
Magic Circle
Instant Summon
Conjure Minor Elemental
Black Tentacles
Galder's Speedy Courier
Secret Chest
Faithful Hound
Private Sanctum
Summon Greater Demon
Conjure Elemental
Infernal Calling
Planar Binding
Create Undead
Create Homonculus
Magnificent Mansion
Mordenkainen's Sword
Clone
Simulacrum
Wish
Mighty Fortress

Considering the concentration limit, and since the druid's list is like 90% concentration spells, I think Wizard have a easier time playing ''pet master''. The Conjurer just add a little more stuff to an already quite powerful summoner.
