D&D 5E Why do guns do so much damage?

Sacrosanct

Legend
Firearms in D&D should do psychic damage for the mental damage discussions about them deal.
More like a feature like this:

Firearm: If you use your action or bonus action to fire a firearm, every player at the table must roll a d20. Any player with a result of 10 or less will be unable to take actions with their character as they start arguing about the realism of said firearm in the game. At the end of their character's normal turn, they may attempt a new d20 roll to shut up and play.

Seriously though, the reason we imagine guns doing so much damage is because we are playing this game in year 2022. At this point in our history, when people think of "dangerous weapon," or when they hear someone is "armed and dangerous," etc., the weapon that immediately comes to mind is some kind of firearm. It's the weapon that we are the most afraid of, so we are going to give it the most frightening stats. Even futuristic weapons are just super-powerful versions of guns (laser blasters, death rays, etc.)

If this game had been written two thousand years ago, swords and bows would be the weapons that do the most damage. And the most powerful weapons imaginable would be just super-powerful versions of swords and bows and hammers that had been "blessed by the gods" or someth---

---oh wait.
