Why do you play D&D?

I play it because it is a fun game and the first ever Pen&Paper game that I was introduced to. And since I write as a hobby and am otherwise very creative, I love tampering with the rules and creating homebrew races, settings and other such things.

It's just a giant sandbox in my own opinion, but with all the material for creating a multiverse instead of mere sand, and that just makes it into a big pile of PURE AWESOME.

I play for the sense of adventure, cooperation, and the thousands of pages of rules. I prefer a system with enough rules that when applied judiciously can be exploited to brilliant effect. I also like a D&D style games because I can play a character who's entire shtick is to make everyone else more effective. For example, when playing a bard, I almost never attack or directly hurt any monster yet I can be the tipping point where the party hits more often and if calculated probably contributed the most damage.

I enjoy DnD for many reasons:

-The lore surrounding a campaign always offers a good story, whether it's homebrew or from commercial sources.

-Having a good time with friends

-The player choices are limitless. One of the best outlets for your imagination/creativity

-Very challenging and your character is highly customizable

For my friend who is the DM: he's also a writer so it allows him to use his storyline, universe and see how players would interact within it.

I don't like strip clubs.

I don't get drunk.

I hate gambling.

Seriously.
One of the few hobbies in my life is a good read. DnD lets me be a part of the story.

I'm pretty sure keeping one's mind active with the reading/math etc. is good for the old grey energizer.

I enjoy the company of others with similar intrests. The team building aspect and the problem solving.

You get to forget congress, tax codes, the HOA, morning traffic patterns etc. for a few hours and play hero.

The list can go on and on. There are so many positives with RPGs.

I play so I can be a hero and play a character. Mechanically, my characters are awful compared to what you guys come up with here, but their personality is always memorable. I love to get into the head of my characters and figure out what makes em tick and work that into how I build and play them at the table.

I also like the sense of wonder. This might sound lame, but I'm not real good at creating adventures so my group and I often use published adventures. And when I'm reading through prepping to run them, there's nothing better than coming across a mansion that has been enchanted with magic to operate itself. Or in the WotBS when they have the giant battles - it was just incredible to see how the writers used magic for an all out battle. So many spells that are useless normally come to life with awesome results.

I also am not really good at creating adventures either. I think that capitalism and the profit motive are to thank for all the values that we enjoy today (I would recommend Ayn Rand's books on this topic.) such as the campaign settings and adventures which we would not have been able to come up with ourselves but only enjoy because of capitalism.

1. I love stories of all kinds. I read, I watch tv, I watch movies, I listen to audio books, and I spend a majority of my time in my imagination.

2. It is a thing to do with friends. Playing video games and board games gets boring and repetitive. Pencil and paper has unlimited opportunities.

3. I like the role playing. It's fun to act like a wizard or a fighter and do things you never could or would in reality.

4. I like games and competition. In this case competing against monsters or evil doers.

5. I like building characters. Not overpowered characters that remove any challenge from the game. I like to come up with an idea of a character and his personality and maybe some back story and then translating what I want him to be into rules.

Why do you play D&D? Is it for the RP experience, is it to play a war-game?
When playing D&D I'm looking for a fun rpg that combines light roleplaying with tactical combat.

I have different favorite rpgs for the occasions I'm looking for a 'deeper' roleplaying experience.
