Why does a closed thread go "klunk"?

When I think of a thread being shut down, I imagine more of a "snap", "ping" or "whomp" sound.

Any other suitable onomatopoeia?

Because originally the weren't 'closed' they were 'locked'. Hence the clank, clunk, etc, representing the jail door being shut for eternity.
You know, I think that's what I hear, too!

Want to know a secret? I'm occasionally annoyed enough when I close a thread that I say "klunk" instead of "Damn, you're acting like an :):):):):):):)." It's kind of cathartic.
