Why does a closed thread go "klunk"?

When I think of a thread being shut down, I imagine more of a "snap", "ping" or "whomp" sound.

Any other suitable onomatopoeia?

I think it's supposed to represent the iconic padlock.

Perhaps *click* or *clang*

Locked threads don't get bumped, so they sink to the bottom, and go "klunk".

Because originally the weren't 'closed' they were 'locked'. Hence the clank, clunk, etc, representing the jail door being shut for eternity.

You know, I think that's what I hear, too!

Want to know a secret? I'm occasionally annoyed enough when I close a thread that I say "klunk" instead of "Damn, you're acting like an ." It's kind of cathartic.
