D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Tbf to Disney they've made some great content since the ST.

ST stuff eh. Key thing is not to go 100% for kids or grogs etc.
I know, I've seen some of it. But I don't have the same enthusiasm for it like I did before.. Andor was great. I even liked Asoka despite not being a devoted Rebels guy, but I'm perfectly fine playing wait and see now and what little memorabilia I bother with is purely nostalgic stuff.

I don't hate it, it just doesn't excite.

Have we given up on the central premise of the thread that EN World needs to liberate Dungeons & Dragons from Hasbro?

I think that's where we really should be taking things... start setting up and planning a Mission: Impossible-style heist into the Wizards of the Coast offices in Renton to grab all the D&D stuff from them and then fly it all out to Russ in England. Then and only then is D&D truly free. 9/10ths of the law and all that stuff. :D

My main takeaway from this interesting conversation is that D&D by WotC is marketed toward young people (teens, etc.), and I am not one, so that's that. I have no intention of being a part of toxic fandom, so I will buy what I like, play what I like, and wish the stewards of the game I loved nothing but good fortune.

Is this with or without the use of magic? ;)

I started with 1E. I love 5E and I’m GenX.
I lived through the AIDS epidemic and been supporting my LGBTQ friends since we were all bullied at school and at home for being different.
I left D&D around 2nd/3rd editions because life happened, and I felt other TTRPG’s held my interest. My nephews got me to relapse (heh) after they heard I played “back in the day”. Got caught up and liked what I saw.
The toxic fandom and gatekeeping are as bad or worse than the bullies me and mine had to deal with.
So, I follow that last sentence above.

Is this with or without the use of magic? ;)
That is a good question... which means we first need to determine what exactly IS magic? Is 'magic' just a universal term for non-physics-based actions, and thus Psionic powers are considered 'magic'... or is it specifically those powers and spells that are powered by The Weave (as defined by the 5E14 Player's Handbook), in which case Psionics and many monster abilities are not 'magical' because despite not adhering to our real-world laws of physics, they are not pulling in energy directly from The Weave to power their functionalit--

--Aw crap, I did it again. Started a whole new tangent for us to argue over. Jeezus... we're NEVER going to liberate D&D at this rate!!! MY BAD! MY BAD!

:D

This is what I'm trying to say. You don't have to abandon one demographic to go after another.
Some time you do, if the marketing that works best on the old demographic is off putting to onboarding the new. Not say that this is an issue here but also remember that the old demographic has their game and material. As Gary pointed out many years ago, they do not really need more material. That said a lot of older material is available on DMsGuld or Drivethru but is not part of the general marketing.

Dungeons & Dragons - Fall 2025 Pride Playmat
The official Dungeons and Dragons YouTube channel posted this. Apparently it’s a playmat they’re selling.

@GothmogIV, it’s a product they’re selling. There is a lot of money you can make selling products to the LGBTQ+ community. The fact that bigots online will post about it in outrage, giving WotC free marketing, is just a bonus.
Holy neon pastels.....

Reminds me of the uniform that Murat designed for a hussar regiment of the Kingdom of Naples, turquoise jacket, cerise boots and lemon-yellow pants if memory serves.

Magic would make the dungeon raid at WoTC HQ go from being a Mission: Impossible to a Mission: Possible. ;) First, we employ a team of Divination Wizards and Artificers to scope out where WoTC hides its' D&D stuff, both its' physical copies and their PDF equivalents. The Artificers can extract the PDFs from the WoTC mainframe. As for the physical copies, we then get to use some Conjuration Wizards to teleport in a team of Rogues and their multiple Bags of Holding...:p
