D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

At this point, I think we'd all be a lot happier if we stopped pretending that we were interested in the same games or hobbies, or had compatible loyalties, just because we enjoyed something that at some time had gone by the name "D&D."

They have a lot of art representing dungeon crawling and gritty play. It's not black and white, but it baffles me that gritty crawler play fans feel like the modern PHB doesn't represent them. There are dozens of pieces in a similar style as below.

That one's kinda corny. Its not gritty more generic cartoony/uncanny valley.

I like most of the subclass art. Maybe swap some pieces around.

Eeyore is a downer and a pessimist, but he generally wants the best for his friends. Micah wants WotC to fail so that games he enjoys more will fill the void. That's not a pessimist, that's a polemic.

At this point, I think we'd all be a lot happier if we stopped pretending that we were interested in the same games or hobbies, or had compatible loyalties, just because we enjoyed something that at some time had gone by the name "D&D."

If only these forums had a way to tag which specific edition of the game your thread was about, and people knew that the thread was about that specific edition. Then we could let the people who enjoyed that edition discuss things together without always being interrupted by people who dislike that edition trying to convince everyone not to play it

For players the matter is not as clearcut, but to be honest, it they are not willing to run a game I have less sympathy for their plight.

I think this is a little unfair.

The truth is that while some people can do a competent job of both playing and GMing, and get value out of both, some people are just no good at one or the other, or actively dislike one or the other.

Telling people who are no good (or have reason to believe they'd be no good) at GMing, or actively don't want to do so to either do it or suck it up is tantamount to saying they should just get out of the hobby if they don't like D&D.

I don't read @Micah Sweet as demanding that anyone cater to his preference. Just that it is sad that the network effects of rpgs make it hard for people with preferences outside the mainstream to find the games they want to play.

This can be true for almost any other game for people unwilling or incapable of playing remotely in many places.

But so many people claim D&D is infinite and capable of all playstyles? Or at least are deathly afraid of excluding people from D&D.

Not saying leave at all. You have to make some amount of effort at at running D&D or turning up at least.
It can be a scramble im always looking for 1 more. Well most of the time not atm.

Yeah for sure, this thread was a dumpster fire from post #1. Derailing this thread can only help things and you're all good

I was speaking more broadly in terms of the continuous trends observed in other threads which often are labeled as DnD 5e (2024), yet always end up with people (plural, not just you) coming into the thread to tell everyone (who didn't ask) how much better their old school playstyle is
