D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

That's kinda what 3PP are there for (amongst many other things). 3PP can do things that WotC doesn't want to touch for one reason or another.
In my developer days, I was always really happy when someone else put out a game book that covered things overlapping with what I was handling, but in ways I didn’t think we could do well and didn’t want to botch. It freed me from feeling obliged to try some anyway.

Yeah, BG3 doesn't have witches that eat children. WotC does
I mean, BG3 does have a hag that does eat a child, but she's honestly played much more for laughs than for horror. You throw a potion at her to make her vomit up the kid.

Like BG3 is such a goofy game with its tongue so firmly within its cheek that I'm not sure where this whole "BG3's popularity proves people still want dark and edgy!" take is coming from.

Well that's the problem with DMs banning whole books carte blanche. I might not have liked the twilight cleric, but that was no reason to ban the necessary ranger updates, the better summon spells, and the lineage rules. But a lot of DMS toss the infants away with the dirty water.

Because the D&D sphere has been so prone to PC-relevant add-on books--and because there's such a reputation for power-bloat and other problems in them, 3PP or not--there's been a certain kneejerk tendency to set up the barricades around the core books and fend off all comers, within or without.

Mostly, I think it's just people seeing what they want to see.

Fans of dark fantasy see the hag and hyperfixate on it, then they start seeing it everywhere: the myconids, the Shadow-Cursed Lands, the old hospital, etc.

Fans of heroic fantasy defeat the [REDACTED] and hyperfixate on that, then they start seeing heroic fantasy everywhere: defeating the slavers, saving the owlbear cub, rescuing the refugees, etc.

Fans of comedy RPGs see the ogre sex scene and hyperfixate on that, and then they start seeing it everywhere: the foul-mouthed pixie, the genie that turns you into cheese, and so on.

But BG3 is generic fantasy, and it's done so well that you can look at it from several angles and not only see what you want to see, but also defend your point of view. That's really hard to pull off.

It does actually. You can rescue one even. Act 3 in case youre wondering.

I guessing you haven't seen the 3.5 boks or the Pathfinder ones?

Specifically Descent into Avernus is watered down recycled Tyrants of the 9 Hells.

Hordes of the Abyss included Malcanthet Demon Queen of Succubu and the Obyriths. Bit more detail tgan WotC produces.

WitC "edgy" content is puerile (Curse of Strahd ha ha I made you eat your parents level) or based on older material thats been recycled and watered down.

3Ebool of vile darkness there's no equivalent. I dont raye tgat book highly its about on par with a typical 5E book.

I've bought around 40 5E books so can make that comparison if you think I'm a hater or whatever lol.
