Yeah, well, "they" don't really need the label, as all work goes to whatever is current.

"We", who have the choice of which we are using, need the label.

That does a bit explain my position on it. As I am part of "the system", I can only really see the current D&D as being particularly important.if it is out of print, it might as well be Dead to Me.

(Barring the occasional collection that comes in, but a "collectable" is a different thing than a standard "product").

Speaking of which: We still stock and carry 2014 Core books, when they are available. It is unusual that they are. (I remember 3.5 books suddenly shooting up in sales and down in availability when 4e was released.) Heck, I remember the same thing regarding 2e books when 3e was released! And yes, the same thing DID happen with 4e books when 5e was released.

So far, while 5.14 books still SELL (I'm talking core here) there isn't a sudden hotness to them. They just carry on. But then again, they also aren't suddenly unavailable, which was always the case previously.

Secondary market prices tend to collapse. I remember AD&D books about $8 on ebay. Snagged some 3.0 books $8 or less post 3.5. Lowest were $1 each.
5.0 about half retail on Facebook marketplace give or take.

3.5 phb went for $10-20 over retail early 4E.

Hard to get 3.x books are breaking $100 rarely 200+. Books of Vile Darkness, Monster Manual IV/V.

OK, I've seen that huge collection of house rules your table uses. It's practically a brand new game that's only vaguely based on AD&D. Do you honestly think that might not be a turn off to people who thought they were getting into a regular AD&D game?

Were anyone to approach under such a misapprehension they would quickly find themselves corrected, either by me/us or by their own research into our system or both. This would - both in theory and in practice - occur before said person/people even got to the stage of being invited in.

It's cool. I have had a similar line of thinking when it came to Advanced 5e (aka Level Up) and 5e. I have thought of 5e as O5e. O as in Original. R5e for 2024 D&D works for me.

Asking for consistency in the colloquial naming conventions of the many, many editions of Dungeons & Dragons is a battle that was lost a long time ago. Let's not forget internal developmental names either. DnDNext and OneDnD are still the names of the primary subreddits where these respective editions are discussed.

I wonder why a lot of the LGBTQIA+ illustrations go with such a style, or is it that everyone would get highly uncomfortable if we had Frank Frazetta or Brom illustrations that had a strong LGBTQIA+ theme?
