I don't think most of the rage against 4e is against the system itself, so much as against the marketing scheme that WOTC came up with. First by saying they weren't working on a new system, and then a few months later announcing it. Then when they were gearing up for the release, they started saying how much 3e sucked and how much better 4e was. Nice way to crap on a loyal customer base. What would the 4e fans say if all of a sudden, WOTC said " we've decided 4e blows, so heres a nice new shiny 5th edition that's way better"?

Probably the same thing they did when 4E was announced. They would embrace 5E and claim all the ones that still loved 4E and were angry about 5E were grognards or whatever name they came up with and decide D&D didn't have any real traditions or history but what the game company decided it was. Thus any one who was disappointed that D&D traditions were thrown aside were complaining about nothing important.

Excellent point!

Hasbro :(

Back when I started playing D&D in 3rd edition I really respected WotC as a company. I was also playing Magic at the time and it wasn't such a money-sucking game it is now. And I don't even blame WotC for the way these 2 games have become now; I blame Hasbro! 4e is simply Hasbro's marketing plan.

WotC was bought by Hasbro and this is how everything came to be as it is now. I don't really blame the guys in WotC, they just got a big boost to their retirement money, and Gary Gygax did the same.

Also, I was a huge fan of eberron, and even its creator, Keith Baker, now works for Paizo!

Beyond that, what really hurts me in 4e is that you just can't be spontaneous at all. You have only none to a couple of actual utility things to do, you can never prepare the same spell/power twice and smart play usually only comes in the form of " how many squares should I slide this monster with my at-will power".

With pathfinder I have many more options, I am not restricted from smart-playing an enchantment or illusion spell because it will deal 2d6+INT to commoners, I can actually trip and disarm an opponent and just because the team's fighter doesn't have a huge label above his head saying "Defender" doesn't mean the average fighter is not going to be in the front line. THAT's why I play pathfinder.

I'm learning so much about 4e in this thread!

For example, did you know it is literally impossible to do anything in 4e without using a power? Literally impossible! Holy crap, I had no idea! I wish I had known before I played 4e and did a whole lot of stuff that never once involved using a power. I've been playing the wrong way the whole time!

Know what I want to see? Just once? I want to see someone point out flaws 4e actually has. I want someone to say "here are my gripes with 4e" and list things that exist, not list things that are made up. I want to see a post that goes into detail on what they want to see fixed in 4e and use actual examples that are present in the game.

But I know full well that I will never, ever see that.

Wait when the hell did Keith Baker reportedly start working for Paizo? I ain't seeing anything about...

Is this meta? Like did you add that in as a wink that the whole post was one big lie?

This thread.

Wow! Sarcasm! That's so original!!!1!

Ladies and gentlemen (and I'm using the terms loosely at the moment),

Please do not feed that which you feel is a troll. If you don't like what they've got to say, you can silently walk away. Responding as so many of you have done raises a troll's visibility, giving him or her exactly what they want. Good job, all of you! Excellent, thoughtful work!

It does not look like this thread is going to go anywhere useful for anyone. THUNK.
