D&D 5E Why I'm Buying the Starter Set

An adventure. Rules are available free.

I think there's a picture developed over the last week. There's clearly gonna be a free game of some kind. The specifics aren't clear, but that's the resounding message.

The adventures are called Horde of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. My assumption was the first part of ToD was in the Starter, part 2 and 3 were these two adventures. I could certainly be wrong, but I can't find the info that says otherwise.

I can't find anything that gives that impression! I could be wrong too, but I don't see anything suggesting that.

It would make sense, though, wouldn't it? You don't need anything else because the Starter is self contained, and you can use the 2 other adventures with it.

No, that doesn't make sense to me. The adventures require only free additions to run; the starter set is not free.

It would make less sense than some might suppose.
Let's review the quote Morrus offered from Mearls:
he says ToD is standalone "in that if you buy it the resources needed to play it are available for free".

If the Starter Set were part of ToD, wouldn't Mearls have said something else about ToD, such as: "if you buy it the resources needed to play it are contained in the first part of the adventure, i.e. the Starter Set."

The way he actually did say it implies that, once you have bought ToD, you still need to acquire the [free] resources to play it; so that would mean that the Starter Set (which does include resources to play an adventure) is not part of ToD -- in my humble interpretation.

You have to buy HotDQ and RoT, right? If the starter set is the first adventure, you have to buy that, too. The pre-reqs and rules in the starter are "free additions" if you want to think of it that way.

Just pointing out how I assumed it worked. Again, I could be wrong. Might be a question for Mearls.

No, because people are expecting to be able to play Tyranny of Dragons without the Starter Set, as well. I could see some kind of somewhat related prologue type adventure, the way the Final Boss of the 4e Red Box adventure was said to be a lackey of Kalarel, the Final Boss of Keep on the Shadowfell. But I don't think it's going to be the full first part of the campaign.

I remember reading somewhere that Hoard of the Dragon Queen was a lvl 1 to 7 adventure. With the starter box having an adventure for lvl 1 to 5 that would suggest that the two products aren't linked.

Perhaps this is why the starter set is aimed at true beginners, whereas people who may have some experience in other versions of D&D or other systems could invest solely in the first adventure before buying the core books. A more detailed adventure with the option to create your own characters.

Also makes sense as it can be run in-store for D&D Encounters etc

Ah, according to the ToD press release, there's no mention of the Starter. Okay, I assumed that was the case. My bad.
