Why is charisma associated with spellcasting?

You could, Great Lemur. The truth is, I think, that it's just a matter of semantics. It's how you "name" the attributes and the mental pictures it evokes in your mind that fits the function of said attribute or not in the system that matters in this instance.
Actually, when I call Wisdom and Charisma poorly defined, I'm referring to mechanics as well as semantics. In my mind, it just looks a little sloppy that Wisdom contributes to Will saves, while Charisma contributes to willpower-related effects such as Turn Undead and various types of spellcasting. For that matter, I'm not entirely certain why Heal is a Wisdom-based skill, or why Search isn't. And Concentration would make more sense as a Willpower skill than Constitution skill, if we actually had a Willpower stat.

The Cha-Wis split has been working great for me since 3.0.

Con = Physical Endurance
Str = Physical Strength
Dex = Physical Precision/Agility
Wis = Mental Endurance
Cha = Mental Strength
Int = Mental Precision/Agility

Your force of personality, your personal 'oomph'.. ability to impose your will on others and by extension, the world.

It's got nothing to do with being shiny, happy people. It's about being able to stare reality in the eyes and tell it to sit down and shut the hell up.

Hooray!

I think that there is also a feat in Races of Stone that lets A Dwarf Sorcerer replace his Constitution for his Charisma for the purpose of spellcasting. :eek:
You might be thinking the Earth Meditation substitution level, here, which is a bit different. I can't find such a feat in RoS, however.

Charisma measures how well you can affect the world around you to conform to your wishes (through Diplomacy, Bluffing, Intimidation, or in the case of sorcerers, Magic).
