wielding two weapons... but not TWF

It is my opinion that "fighting in this manner" refers to making two attacks as an option, rather than wielding them, and so I agree with Dandu. The alternative would be to assume that a character wielding a spiked shield and a sword would always attack with a penalty.

Where Dandu and I disagree, and you seem to agree, in your second line, is that off hand attacks take the -4 off hand penalty.
Aren't we only disagreeing about whether you can reallocate the off hand penalty by declaring your character ambidextrous to equal degrees in both hands?

How about a trait?

Ambidexterity (trait)

Benefit: You can attack with a weapon in your off-hand without incurring the normal off-hand penalties. If attacking with two weapons, normal two-weapon fighting rules apply, modified by any feats you may have. You gain a +1 bonus on Sleight of Hand checks.

Drawback: Your casual use of both hands is unsettling to most people. You suffer a -1 penalty on Diplomacy and Gather Information checks.

What, seriously?

1. This makes no sense.
2. Juggling and piano would get better, not worse.

ok, drop the perform penalty. The rest seems to make more sense. I was thinking more along the lines of P/singing or P/oratory though when I added that bit in. That's the problem with cascade skill listings - too broad use brush-stokes with them most of the time.

But how does ambidexterity unnerve people?
I've been around ambidextrous people, and not found it disconcerting. You've been around ambidextrous people and probably haven't even noticed them.

I am ambidextrous...sort of.

Its not so much upsetting as that I sometimes disrupt things. However, this disruption occurs at the dinner table 99.9% of the time. Why?

Because, for one thing, my glass tends to migrate around my place setting, my knife & fork swap hands, and so forth...meaning that sometimes, people are sitting next to a right-handed person (which is normal and there is no issue) and sometimes they suddenly find themselves seated next to a lefty.

Elbows clash, glasses get mixed up, etc.

Buy I can't say its ever caused me any real issues.

call the inquisition!!1

If its the Flemish one, I'm expecting it.

If its the Canadian one, i'm expecting it.

The Spanish one, though? They'll never come after me...

i think the trick is you actually can make an off-hand attack only if you attack with both weapons on the same round. if you only attack with one hand (be it right or left) - no off-hand attack occures, no penalty needed.

i believe that off-hand rule doesn't represent "handedness", but rather how hard it is to concentrate on fighting with both weapons. i mean it is harder to operate your second weapon not because it is in your left hand, but because it's damn hard to do elaborate fencing moves with two hands simultaneously if you don't have a special training.
