Will we ever see AD&D Third Edition

Just conjecturing here: What if someone buys off the AD&D liscense and tries to revive that line? So we could have AD&D third edition. Maybe DarkSun could be the core setting, or dragonlance.

Thoughts on how that would play out?

That happened. About a decade ago.

Have you been hiding under a rock or something? This board wouldn't exist if it didn't.

And the core setting was Greyhawk, by the way.

There is Hackmaster, considered by some to be AD&D 3e. It was licensed from the owner, too.

There is Castles & Crusades, considered by some to be a streamlined AD&D, so maybe AD&D 3e.

There is new material being written, published and sometimes sold for AD&D proper, and/or - I believe - an AD&D-like 'SRD' (?)

Oh, and there is also, in fact, an AD&D 3e PDF floating around the internet somwhere.

Then there are the many, many documents containing house rules and so on. '3e'? I guess.

i thought that hackmaster had some "renew" problems, and maybe it wouldnt use ad&d references names anymore (as in "joke names", like robinloft)

This isn't exactly what you were asking for, but there's a thread on dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22014) discussing TSR's plans to release a 3rd edition AD&D before they went bottom up. According the Ryan Dancey, the plans were to move the next edition away from the player's option supplements - pretty much the opposite direction WotC went. I've always wanted to see what those guys drafted up.

Ryan Dancey has suggested that AD&D 3E was essentially going to be a reboot of 2E, and that is why it was scrapped. I think this information came from the Fear the Boot interview, but I might be wrong about that.

I'm of the opinion that Castles & Crusades is essentially 3rd Edition AD&D. Troll Lord Games has even got a a certain well-known person responsible for AD&D on board with them...
