I will probably buy it and give it a try.

Whether I switch to 4E over the long term depends on a number of things, including whether I can use my library of 3.X materials with 4E without too much trouble (I'm not talking necessarily of translating stats, but rather of switching a 3E Orc for a 4E Orc in an adventure and the precise effects it has on gameplay, for instance), whether the D.I. operates as well as its supposed to, whether the D.I. is necessary or not to the enjoyment of the whole game experience, and so on.

Middle option. I'm doing fine enough with what I do use, but if the Spring of 2008 brings out an exceptional product, I may change my mind.

Is it so wrong that I'm quite unsettled by 1/3 of the voting populace choosing the one at the top?

I answered "I probably will not buy it, but might eventually" but as it now seems that 4E will not be OGL, the answer is "No, never". If 4.5 or 5.0 are OGL, then we'll see.

It is my understanding, according to other posters who were at the GenCon presentation, that 4E falls under the OGL and will benefit from a new SRD. Further, Wizards wants third party publishers to continue to support D&D. Looks like 4E is definitely OGL.

The only thing to get me to play 4E is if it's easy to convert the 3.5E stuff to 4E!

Very unlikely.

And yes, Wizards does recommend you begin new campaigns with Fourth Edition. “It’s not going to be as huge a jump,” as from Second Edition to Third Edition, said Slavicsek, “but there’s enough changing in the core system of how we are doing classes and races and characters that we’re not even gonna attempt [Conversion]—we’re just telling you it’s better to start over.” Conversion went over like a lead balloon with Third Edition anyway.

Yeah, Wayne, I guess we can forget about converting much of anything. That's nice.

I sit here and look at all the recent book purchases--the PHB II, DMG II, Drow book, Monster Manual IV, Monster Manual V, Spell Compendium, Champions book--and so on--and I wonder, what's the point? All of this stuff bought in the last 6-18 months is now obselete and largely *useless*

Definitely buying the three core books and probably the FR core book. Then, I will see if it is good enough to buy more. :)

Whatever one might think about the 4th edition... it was clear, that it will come, and Wizards have put out enough good stuff to give them the benefit of the doubt, at least initially. :)

I think almost everyone will buy 4e, including most of the 10% claiming they won't.

We get this every new edition. People didn't want to leave OD&D (some never did), 1e, 2e, 3e, and now 3.5e. But, we almost always eventually do, even if reluctantly. A few (a very small few) will never make the move, but almost everyone does.
