I only have maybe 300 dollars of non core 3/3.5e books and the gamers in my group have a similar amount of money invested or less.
So if the new rules are good and look interesting we'll at least try them out.

Considering I own about four 3.x books, none of them cores, and this announcement coincides with my having a job that'll let me start collecting a game line and starting work on a new campaign setting, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say "yes".

Hell, I'm gonna completely forgo my usual RPG purchase habits and go down to the FLGS for one, rather than ordering from FRP Games, unless somehow internet ordering would be faster. I'm taking the cores home as they come out.

I don't like your poll.

I will play 4th ed, but I won't buy anything that's already in the SRD. So eventually I will buy some 4th ed materials, if they appeal to me. I will start playing it right away, I'm sure. The chances that it will appeal to me are high enough that I can say that with confidence.

But, 4e could surprise me. But the more I think about it, there is one thing that i hope they didn't do ... and I fear they did. Per encounter spellcasting. If it went there, then it'll be too viseo-gamey for me. Who was it that said it really well in another thread? Spell per encounter management will simply mean that everyone starts out at full HP every encounter. Because who wouldn't heal after each encounter if your spells are refreshed so quickly? If it went that way, it is highly unlikely that I'll be following.

I don't know if this will happen or not, but it doesn't sound good to me either. What i predict happening is that 4e will have tons of good rules that really are an improvement over 3rd edition, and a lot of stuff we don't like, that will get houseruled away. On top of that, we'll have something similar to Grim Tales come out eventually, which will further change and refine how we play the game.

I get so little opportunity to use this image. I better use it while I can. :)

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I probably won't be buying any 4th edition beyond the core books. I may buy minis here or there to fill in my collection, and I will certainly be buying those dungeon tiles, but I think I will hold out for the next edition of D&D - be it 4.5 or 5th edition.

If the cycle holds, then in 5-8 years there will be another new edition. My kids are 5 and 3 right now. They'll be ready to jump in much better in 5-8 years, so I might as well save the thousands of dollars and just wait until next time.
