Just OOC, because I'm a very active consumer of console RPGs and a big fan of per-encounter mechanics, what video game has them? I'd really like to get a cite on that so I could try it out, because the ones I'm familiar with almost invariably use a spell point/mind point system where it refreshes only at save spots.

You could make a case for most of the Wild ARMS games, I think.

I will be much more likely to buy in if it is readily backwards compatible.

ie if the power levels are commensurate and I can convert 3.5 material on the fly, then I'll probably buy it. if the difference is as big as 2e to 3e, probably not for a long, long time.

If 4e-3e=1e, then Yes

In other words, if they have taken the bad 3e stuff (excessive DM prep time for instance) out of 4e and has a good 1e feel to it, I will buy it. If 4e is just 3e in drag, I won't buy it.

Probably not. I use a lot of 3rd party d20 material for my homebrew world, and I can't see updating all that to 4e (since I didn't even update it to 3.5). Maybe if WOTC had an existing world I like, but I can't stand Eberron and while I don't hate it, the FR never did that much for me.

This poll is just a tad premature, don't you think? We don't actually know much of anything yet. Without calling out any particular person, I can absolutely guarantee that a lot of the "Absolutely yes" votes will change to "Nah" by the time it's released, and a lot (probably even more, to judge by precedent) of the "Never!" votes will change to "Yes" once we learn more about it.

Right now, people are voting based almost exclusively on gut emotion and knee-jerk reaction.

Its a good point. I'm still upset because I feel like the information that was released earlier this year was intentionally misleading (big news always at D&D Xperience, 4th is a long way off), but as far as the system itself . . . I've been onboard for FR for the last 20 years, so I'm not likely to jump off now . . . as to weather I pick up anything but core material to support the Realms stuff . . . that's the question, and I can't answer it right now.

I really don't know. I guess I'll look at any previews that come out, and listen to early reports after it comes out. If it sounds good, I'll at least pick up the core books. After that? We'll see, I guess.

It's such a different experience than the changeover from 2nd to 3rd, since I have more invested now than I did back in high school. I walked in halfway through 2e and had to play catch-up. 3.x is/was my edition, simply because I was there from its release.

Anyhow, I'll figure it out in time. Early days, yet. :)

Of those released outside Japan at this point, it only applies to Wild ARMs 4 - and even then, spell points actually did ablate between battles, only hit points didn't.

Alter Code F may be the same way. I haven't had a chance to really come to grips with that one.

Also, an addendum to my Tactics/RPG exception: 80-90% of the battles in TRPGs have at least a day of travel time or rest between them, so only in a few select circumstances does the fact their system is per encounter make the slightest difference.

I honestly don't know right now.

I really expected when 3.0 came out that I'd just give it a pass. "Fiendish Dire Weasel" sold me. If they put something that shiny-shiny in 4e (and I'm sure they will) I'll grab a copy. And I'm sure that I will have made much, much worse purchasing decisions...

But I still can't say right now. I ought to be able to just say "Yes!", but I can't...

I suppose in part it will depend on the other people I play with. And in part it will depend on how the books are released... I think the option to own D&D while it's still just one book (again) might be too good to pass up...
