I'll definitely be buying 4th Edition, unless the previews reveal aspects totally to my dislike.

Even if it's a revised & consolidated 3.5 Edition, then it's worth it to me to not have everything spread out among so many books. If it takes a cue from the Star Wars SAGA game, especially in terms of streamlining the skill system and high-level play, then I'm even happier.

I don't see D&D ever losing the basic classes and archetypes, as that would change the game too much. "Talent trees" per class like in the new SW game would be most welcome.

The one thing that could turn me off completely would be a move to a "per encounter" allocation of spells and other abilities. I'm not really that thrilled about the "per day" mechanic as it is, as it's a pretty arbitrary and somewhat nonsensical limitation, especially for non-spell abilities. But "per encounter" seems pretty arbitrary and nonsensical as well, from an in-fiction point of view.

I'm remaining optimistic, however.

Gosh, and it seems so recently that I was posting bitter comments about 2E to 3E changes on Eric Noah's Unofficial D&D 3E News' incredibly simple forums. Time flies when we're having fun, I guess.

To be honest, unless they drop some amazing bombshells about 4E that make it sound deeply unattractive, though, I'll buy it without examining it too closely. It's Star Wars Saga-like, well, that'd be pretty ideal, I think.

Edit - Holy jesus is my sig line ever a flash-back to 2002. I was just impressed my login still worked after all these years.

I will not buy any 4th edtion products. I have enough 3/3.5 to last forever. The OGL is not going away. I am sure that Green Ronin, Mongoose, Necromancer, and many other companies will continue to put out products that are 3.5/ogl.

I'll continue to buy WOTC until 4e comes out. Afterwords, they won't get as much as a dime from me.

As it is, I have been having a lot of fun running d&d adventures using savage worlds.

WotC has proven over the last few months that they either ...
1- do not know what my gaming group is looking for when it comes to our hobby and the support we would like to have
2- are aware of what we are looking for and have decided that we are no longer their target market

Either way it appears clear that they are out of touch with me, my gaming groups and most of the gamers I know.

For me, 3.5 is a solid system with many outstanding adventures and settings that still remain unexplored. Why would I want to give my money to a gaming company so out of touch ?

If it is indeed 4E being announced I seriously doubt I'll buy it. Adventures will probably still be usable enough to do so, but that will be it.

I don't need yet another set of books to sell me the same ideas again.

Besides, I have "my" system of choice, and it isn't going anywhere. Plus it will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future.

The only way I see me buying 4E is if it goes simple, flexible, yet powerful.

I only see it becoming more complex, even more wide open, so they can print even more material for 4E than 3E, so they can take longer to go to 5E.
