Creature Cataloguer
windghosts, if you were wondering, are fairly powerful creatures from the forgotten realms. they look like gigantic upside-down cones, with a giant tooth-filled maw at the bottom, which can swallow characters whole. this weird thingies also have some tough powers, such as their "warp dweomer/magic shift" which alters the location of where magic takes effect...
anyway, the point is, i need to know what type these monsters should be, and my gut says Aberration (actually, it says "rumble rumble", as well as other less pleasant things). however, the text states, quote, "windghosts may be native to another plane". but that's all it says about it, they may be native to another plane. it's been suggested by another poster that they may be from the plane of Air, but who really knows since i only have one sentence to go on?
well, take your vote, and whatever comes out the most is what it's gonna be. feel free to post comments and responses below.

also, just a question, anyone know if they appeared somewhere else before the Ruins of Myth Drannor?

The Myth Drannor box set indicates that Windghosts are the servants of Shaundakul (an abandoned god of winds and luck, I believe). So, being servants of a deity and all, seems to me they would be Outsiders.

oh right, i remember a reference to that in one of those faiths & avatars books (powers and pantheons, right?)

Shaundukal is hardly an abandoned god! He is now a lesser god and quickly rising in popularity. Windghosts have served as his servitors since the time of Myth Drannor.

I always though windghosts were related to phaerimm, transmuted by Shaundukal in form and temperament to their present state. They are cone-shaped and have powerful magic abilities like Phaerimm. In addition, they possess wind-based powers that are reminescent of Shaundukal.

I'm unsure whether they should be aberrations like phaerimm or outsiders becuase they serve Shaundukal. However, they should definately by CN alignment instead of LN (like in 2nd ed.) to more closely match Shaundukal's alignment.

Please post the conversion when it is done, I'd like it for my campaign as well.

don't worry about that; you can count on me posting it right here. probably tomorrow. :)
in the meantime, there are already a few monsters on that thread, namely blazing bones, electrum dragon, dread, lythlyx, and bone naga.

maybe this will help (and maybe not). :)

from a purely game-mechanical point of view, this 9HD, Int 16 monster would get:

aberration
BAB +6
saves +3/ +3/ +6
skill points 48
feats 5

outsider
BAB +9
saves +6/ +6/ +6
skill points 99
feats 3

i guess, then, the real question is: would being an outsider make it too powerful for what it should be??

c'est la vie... it's tied at 8 as i leave to go home from work. oh well, i will leave this thing for the weekend, then finish it up on sunday night or monday morning, and post the conversion. will let you know the results later. :)

well, as i post this, "outsider" is starting to win out. i'll make my final decision tomorrow, finish up the conversion, and post it. :) i will also let you know, here, when i do so.
