I am in the market to get a new keyboard and I am looking into getting a wireless keyboard but which brand/company should i look, Logitech, Mircosoft or any of the other brand names? I will be using it mostly for gaming, word processing and surfing the net. Any suggestions?

I had a no-name wireless keyboard and mouse combo in college and it worked fine. I'd use the keyboard to do homework from my bed.

I don't have any experience with modern wireless keyboards, but things to keep in mind include whether the keyboard needs line-of-sight to the transmitter, and battery life. Generally ones that do not recharge last for longer periods of extended use. I've got a wireless mouse at work and I only have to change the batteries every few months, but I know someone who has a rechargeable mouse that says it only lasts a few hours before it needs to go back to the charging dock. I imagine keyboards would be in the same boat.

I have 2 microsoft wireless key boards and mice. Which I use on two different computers. I haven't had a problem with either one of them. One is about 4 years old and the other is under a year. I like that the system lets me know if the batteries are running low. I'm not sure if this notification works on other brand wireless keyboards.

I'm not a big Microsoft fan, but man do they ever make good wireless mice and keyboards. I've been using a Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard and Wireless Optical Mouse for years and not only have no complaints, I have nothing but praise. Both go about 6 months before battery changes (2 AA each) are needed.

The same was not true at all for a couple of Logitech ones I had at a workplace. Neither was very nice, and would require resynching regularly. The MS pair have never lost the connection, even finding it with no effort on my part right after a battery change.

I highly recommend Microsoft keyboards and mice.

I used to think that wireless peripherals were one of the dumbest things in the world. I got one for Christmas two years ago and ignored it till last September. I could kick myself for not opening it up sooner.

You know, I thought a wireless mouse and keyboard would make an awesome combo with my big-screen TV. Then when I got them I realized they were so cumbersome that they quickly wound up in my closet. A keyboard doesn't really rest in the lap that well, and I can't imagine being hunched over a coffee-table that's at knee-height.

How do you folks use these things?

I like it for a bunch of reasons.

At my desktop, it's easier to clear off space so that I can actually use my desk as a desk. Granted it's a rare occasion nowadays, but if I'm working out of a physical book, I prefer to have it open on the desk and the keyboard in front of it or in my lap.

My TV feed is to a different room so it allows me to do stuff on that screen while I'm physically in the room with it. When I'm at the TV though, it's usually to watch a movie. If I'm trying to be productive, it's not going to be while I'm lounging on my couch. If I am doing any heavy typing I usually throw a pillow into my lap to raise the keyboard up to desk height.

For my D&D setup, I've got two back to back screens, so it allows me to pass the mouse and keyboard over to my players so that they can use the computer from their monitor.

On the keyboard drawer of my desk. Definitely not in my lap.

That's because they are not from Microsoft. ;)

They only sell them, but the production is done by another company.

Had a wireless keyboard for a while, but found that the advantages of having no wire on the keyboard are so minimal, that I went back to a wired one, where you do not have to switch batteries every now and then. I do use a wireless mouse though and wouldn't want a wired one anymore (it's just annoying when you move the thing around all the time unlike the keyboard, which usually stays at its place on the desk). However, only a rechargable one with docking station, not a cheap one with batteries.

Depending on the setup, like when using the computer with the tv screen also, it might have its uses, but not for me at this point.

Bye
Thanee
