When I create new PCs or just play around with character concepts, I find myself gravitating to a particular race more often than others. To be honest, I think it's an identification thing - that particular group of humanoids tweaks something in me.

I was just wondering if you do the same.

My 1E characters represented just about every pc race with the exception of the Hobbits (Yes, I know 'halflings'), but was mostly elves, half-elves and humans.

After discovery of the Able Learner feat I've not rolled up anything but humas since. That's about 10 characters.

I still like elves and half-elves, but if I ever want to play one, I'll do the 1E to 3E conversion and play one of them.

Well, I identify most with humans, being one myself, but I really, really like elves, and play them as much as I can. The occasional human, too.

Dwarf. I admit I drink more martinis than beer, but I definitely have the build and the beard. Besides, I share a certain dwarven dourness and irritability but I still manage to make alot of friends. I even actually put down a description of a dwarven cleric when I was asked to describe my dream job.

"Immediate opening for dwarf with four or more hit dice. Divine spellcasting ability preferred. Duties include crushing orc skulls and maiming goblins. Quarterly dragon or giant-killing likely. Some light wenching and drinking required."

Oddly enough, my girlfriend is a gnome. She's 4'10" and all of 90 pounds soaking wet. Perhaps more gnomishly, she really likes the idea of designing toys and tends to dress in brightly-colored garments, including a bright blue pointy hat.

Lets be honest. Bilbo accidentally stole one freaking ring and we ended up with a race of uber-thief nancy boys.

You live in the Midwest: Are you going to tell me this doesn't also describe most humans? (Substitute Budweiser for tea.)

What a typical member of a race is like and what an adventurer is like are two different things.

I've moved more than 18 times in my life, lived in the third world and visited a war zone as a non-combatant. I assure you that the reactions I get from my fellow humans to this most of the time is akin to how the Sackville-Baggins reacted to Bilbo and Frodo.

Pre-3E halflings were just fine as hobbits (intellectual property issues aside). If they didn't want hobbits in the core book, they should have just dropped them or explicitly replaced them with kender. Poor old Yondolla was one of the best aspects of D&D hobbits and now she's like a racial appendix, an organ designed for a no-longer-needed role.

I not only played hobbits back in the old day, I ran an all-hobbit game that kicked ass. My players still fondly remember trying to figure out who was killing off the prize-winning livestock at the regional fair.
