As far as Monte 'not being in check', I trust him a LOT more than I do WotC these days. Hello - Epic Level Handbook, Savage Species, Mystic Theurge - who is feeding the powergamers here? Monte's stuff is sometimes over the top, but that's because he is imaginative and likes to push buondries.

"Freely Accepts" as in "no cost to scribe" is the meaning used by two of the original game designers (Monte Cooke and Skip Williams).

Monte made this clarification while he was still with WOTC, and was still "official". Same thing with Skip, in his guise as The Sage. Monte has re-iterated it on his message boards, but I remember when it was originally clarified and reported by this very site.

It is also the Interpretation used in the Living Greyhawk campaign, which is the "Official" WOTC RPGA campaign.

Every single source I have been able to find (official or "semi-official") agrees on this interpretation.

What sources do you have that says your interpretation is the most correct one? The dictionary doesn't count, since it is defined both ways in the dictionary.

What indicates that your interpetation is more official than the authors?

(one more thing: "Monte is official." There. I said it. Neener neener neener. ;) )

Hmmm then why is there not a FAQ or Errata to clerify as this has been a topic for some time?

But if that was his intention, then his choice of words was very, very poor... because despite the fact that the American Heritage dictionary gives "without charge" as a definition, the word simply is not used that way.

In your part of the world. Perhaps the word is used that way in Monte's part of the world.

Language changes over time, and words are used in different ways. The word is certainly used that way in some part of the world, hence the definition in the American Heritage Dictionary that you scoff at.

Hmmm Savage Species seems to be ok. No more problems then the first books.

Also the newer books do not have the test base that the first books had.

I just find it ludicrous that a magic item that will save you tons of money and Eliminates a class disadvantage (that helps Balance the class) would only be priced at 9k.

Im mean its like having a item that stores 45 lvls of spells that a Sorcerer can use as if they were known spells all for the price of 9k.

Show me something that indicates your interpretation is more "official" first.

And what does that have to do with the fact that there have been many post wars like this on the subject?

If there is confusion on the scale like this, they FAQ or Errata to make it more clear.

No such thing has happened.

So then its your word vs mine.

I will be interested to see what 3.5 does.

I would bet they will make it as you say but up the cost considerably.

Andy Collins has said that the scribing rules are changing, "Much to the wizard's glee". That suggests scribing is going to be cheaper.

And hopefully takes a shorter amount of time.

I'm with Hypersmurf on the wording of BBB, though. If it does eliminate scribing costs, that part was horribly written. I'm an English major and an editor. I don't know if that makes me an expert, but that was not worded well at all.

And I also agree that it's very underpriced for what it does. I think it's worth the 9000gp just to be able to store 45 spells in a small book. Spellsbooks are too big and bulky.
