Wizards Presents: Inside the making of 4th edition, plus new art

Sounds a little better.

I am worried about the backdoor that they wrote themselves in terms of unfinished art. How much of the art in these books is unfinished? All of it? 80%?

That's really unfair. "They" didn't write themselves a backdoor. One WotC editor blogged about a book she's excited about because her name's on the cover.

She says that "as of right now" all the art that's been ordered for the PHB is different. She says it's "possible" that one of the concept sketches (which some of the art is) in this book "might" be turned into a finished piece that gets added to the PHB between now and its final layout.

Sheesh, sometimes I think people are trying to be offended.

I'm neither here nor there on these preview books. I'm sure they'll be fine, and the audience for them will enjoy them immensely.

I just wish the design team would stop inventing words beyond words needed for the game. Concepted has shown up TWICE by two different staff members, and I want to grit my teeth each time.

Conceived, people...you CONCEIVED something. Not concepted.

Thank you.

Take care
Don

To be fair, this sounds to me like language that has been passed down from above. I'd bet my eye teeth this term was coined by an MBA (not necessarily at WotC). Probably a marketing expert.

Any MBA's here, please don't take offence. But you know what I'm talking about ;)

Although it's listed as informal usage, "concept" as a verb does appear in dictionaries (such as Dictionary.com).

So it's not a WotC thing, and it's not technically improper, to use "concepted."

You're cogently over-ideating the paradigm. :p

I agree with those who have strongly criticized the marketing. I am actually still interested in 4e, at least to see if it might be an improvement. But I feel like I am interested in it largely despite of the marketing and not because of it. The marketing largely has made me feel talked down to by the designers. It think the key difference was that with 3e, the designers did the marketing by showing bits and pieces of what was coming, and what we saw was interesting. This time they are largely trying to keep things secret, while continuously talking at us to tell us that they know better and we just have to belive them that it is "really cool". Also, a lot of things just seem like marketing gimmicks to get me to spend more money than I need to spend to enjoy the game. I wish they would focus on making a great product rather than trying to force me into paying for things I don't want. If the new rules are great, then I will like them and I'll gladly pay for stuff to enjoy the new edition. If they are not, no amount of internet gimmicks and no amount of bloggers telling me it is "cool" is going to force to to spend money.
