Wizards to sell naming rights to D&D spells -- will YOU buy?

Well, back in 1973, I paid Gary $147, three cheeseburgers, and the phone number to a woman I knew in Canada. I wouldn't pay much more than that, really.. especially as he sold me the name rights in perpetuity! I can't believe Wizards is doing this to me.

Would I get royalties every time the spell was cast.... I mean, really - for the kind of money they are likely to ask I would expect some kind of small return on my investment.

Hey, what if it goes corporate? After all, ad placement is all the rage in video game - why not take it to RPGs as well.

I think it could be just the thing to give WotC a boost.

Missed ya, Bugaboo.

Welcome back Bugaboo. It's been too long.

I couldn't pay over $1000 myself. My players just don't pay me enough.

Have you received Bugaboo's new Suggested GM Rate Sheet included in fiscal 2002's Annual Report? It's recently adjusted for inflation and cost of living.

I'd also recommend rereading Chapter 21 of the "franchise bible". There're some good tips for raising advertising revenue.

Using Bugaboo's materials and methods, I actually have a small bid to rename a spell: WanderingMonster's Prying Eyes

That's what makes me special. If all wombats were savage, I wouldn't stand out of the crowd, would I?

P.S. I'm told that one of the last stupid things you can do in this life is to stick your hand down a wombat hole. Australians care to comment?

Heh. If I ever run a D20 Modern game with lots of magic I just may use these ideas. ;)

I couldn't find the link to this announcement on Wizard's website, could someone provide a link? I'd really like to see something saying that they planned to release these Named Spells when they release D&D 4th Edition in the Summer of 2003. I'm amazed, I really thought they'd wait at least until 2004 or 2005.

Concerning my cleric/mage, Edena

I would love it if Edena were immortalized in this way.
Who wouldn't want their character immortalized?

I could substitute my character Osilovar for Edena.
Or Aerviue.
Or Edelaith.
Or Aerviue.
Or Gwindlin.

All of them are, or were, mages and magistresses.

There are two reasons why I cannot take WOTC up on their offer, though.

One reason is darkly humorous, and the other is very serious.

The darkly humorous reason is simple: If people start having to say: I am casting Edena's Fireball, or Edena's Lightning Bolt, or Edena's (whatever) I think they will all quit playing Dungeons and Dragons, and the whole HOBBY will collapse!
After all, it just will not DO to have a super-munchkinized, super-cheating, super-ridiculous cleric 121 / wizard 40 with his name on D&D spells! :D

- - -

The very serious reason is quite simple:

None of my characters invented any of the spells already in print.
None of my characters are likely or even unlikely to have invented any new spells that come out in later products - they are all busy ADVENTURING, not conducting (extremely time intensive) spell research.

The Gaming Conventions forbid me to falsely represent the deeds and actions of my characters.
