Woot!! WotC renews Dragonlance license!

They can look forward to it all they like. The very significant problem that WotC faces with DragonLance, is that while the brand may be WotC's property - it's Tracy's and Margaret's baby and always has been. Their names on the prodcuts are more important than WotC's logo on the product. The goodwill in the brand requires their involvement.

I think, historically, Dragonlance's problem has been more that it's Novels always did way better than the game stuff. WotC retained the novels (including producing some by MW&TH) and the game products were licensed out.

Interesting that the license ends just prior to the D&D Experience...

SWAG: 4E will be announced at GenCon this year. 4E Settings (Greyhawk, Dragonlance, and Eberron) will be announced at D&D XP 08.

Isn't it interesting that they are now saying that it's (also) Forgotten Realms' problem? :\

Folks, this announcement is just WotC learning from the Dragon/Dungeon announcement.

Imagine WotC's original Dragon/Dungeon worded this way instead:

"Wizards of the Coast has extended its existing licensing agreement with Paizo Publishing. Under the agreement, Paizo Publishing will continue to publish Dragon and Dungeon magazine until September 2007. Wizards will continue delivering content previously found in those magazines online under the new Digital Initiative."

Instead of revoking the license, they are "extending it" and instead of outright killing the content is moving elsewhere, it's just word games.

Now, it is nice that WotC is working with these publishers to allow them to finish what they had planned, what sucks is that I think both MWP and Paizo were the best thing that ever happened to Dragonlance and Dragon/Dungeon respectively.

Random thought of the day:

Who would win, Raistlin or Drizzt? My gold is on Drizzt....

It's a tough one to call there. Riastlin most likely has access to save-or-die spells, but once he's engaged, Drizzt has the uper hand, purely as he's a melee dude!

If WotC has phrased the announcement this way, the reaction would have gone over better. Mind you, in this case, "better" is a relative term. People still would have balked (people always balk when it comes to change), but I don't believe that as many people would have that pi$$ed off and that many people would have sworn off WotC products. Granted I don't know how many people have forgiven WotC by now and have gone right back to buying their products, but I believe there would have been less of a hiccup if they had phrased the announcement differently.
