World Reveal of Baldur’s Gate 3 Gameplay at PAX!

At this stage of development, they've been working this since like 2017 at least. At the very least they know by now what is planned for being in it.
When you develop software you divide features into things you must have, things you would really like to have but could do without, and things that it would be nice to add if you get the opportunity.

And, these days, things that would be good to hold back for DLC.

Also worth noting: 2 years is a very short time to have been working on a AAA game. 5 years isn't unreasonable. If they get it finished in 3 it will either be very impressive, lacking in features, or a mess of bugs.

I'm basing my thoughts on how long it took them to do DOS2.

There is a hint on the D&D page about the plot of BG3. Possible Spoiler alert below.

The Illithids want to Dominate the World so that their Elder Brains can create a psychic network so big that they can create a portal to bring back their Nautiliod Fleet.

See in some Mindflayer lore the Mindflayers survived the war with Gith by sending their Empire into the distant future, this would be a way for their empire to return early.

Of course when not just the Gith find this out but other enemies of the Mindflayers, like the Dark Dwarves and Aboleths find this out, things are going to nasty. We could have a multifaceted war going on, Githyanki vs Githzerai vs Mindflayers vs various Realms nations and who knows else what else.

sings Hello Realm Shaking Events my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.

Hi, I'm a Mindflayer, but don't let that worry you

This is anti-Mindflayer propaganda. I hope you will all join me in boycotting this vile game.

I wonder how Dragonborn look like (assuming there isn't one on the pictures I weren't able to load yet). High quality scales that di not look like plastic are hard when you zoom in this close
The Red Prince was already looking good in Divinity but the graphics in BG3 are leagues better and less comical.

Here is an article with easier to view versions of the pictures.

Thanks. But by now I managed to load all of them.
I wonder if that Gith is the same one who rode the dragon in the trailer.

The reception so far seems rather lackluster with many people disliking turn based combat and fearing it will be "too much like Divinity"

Looks pretty good so far. Some of the combat screenshots immediately assuaged some worries: hit points aren't inflated, and I can immediately recognize some spells that use similar icons from the previous games (one preview I saw showed a wizard with Grease, Magic Missile, and Fireball, among others, on the action bar)

Yeah the dialogue options are going to take some getting used to, but if D:OS-style turn-based combat is confirmed I am 100% here for it
The past tense dialog is really interesting, even if my initial response is dislike. But I think it's interesting enough to give a chance, and I can see how it might theoretically aid a feeling of literary scope and flavor if the rest of the game supports it, so we'll see.

Other than that I'm stoked about the turn based aspect, I would have put money down that no AAA title in 2020 would have taken a risk on a turn based combat system. Really happy to be proven wrong!

They look different.

I didn't expect them to have Spelljammer. Or playable Githyanki or Vampire Spawn

Also, rather restricted class list. Hopefully they will add more.
