I think the monk works best with a druid in the party (for barkskin and magic fang). A monk takes very careful and creative playing to be truly effective, so without a particularly knowledgeable and creative player, bolstered by a friendly druid, I think it's much harder for a monk to be effective.

The other classes offer much better off-the-cuff firepower, muscle, or skills that don't require as much thought and planning to implement.

The answer is really: Nothing.
Once you have the bases covered you can add anything into the mix.

Complaining aside, monks are just as useful as other characters, and for more than wizard killing too.
(As if "kill the wizard first" isn't the most generally useful battle tactic on the planet after lower levels.)

Actually the other I think is "Kill the High Gorgon and his pack!" :)

But depends on the monk. I mean Monk of the Sacred Chain, sure that has some very good chances of taking down many opponents. But that's just me.

I chose the monk, and it appears that lots of other folks felt the same way that I did.
I can't except monk over rogue because monk is a good second front line fighter. They have great maneuverability allowing them to react to a threat behind the party (where the fragile members are hiding). I don't understand how a monk doesn't add anything unique when they have extra running? Mobility in combat is very useful.

I still say a duplicate rogue is worse (if and only if, he has the same skill distribution as the other rogue).

nah, 2 fogues can better focus their skills and who better then another rogue for a rogues flanking buddy. besides if one goes down then you have a spare. :D

San is right. Two rogues tend to be better than one monk on most occasions. Especially when comes to flanking AND sneak attacking.

I'd probably say that as a 5th member, the monk would add the least to the group. He doesn't really fill or expand any particular niche in the group, and the flavor is entirely off for a traditional fantasy campaign.

Agreed, give me any other class besides monk. It's the hardest to figure out at times...and certainly won't do you much good at mid-high levels.
