Character names were composed with a schoolboy sense of humor, and (sometimes) a German dictionary.
Examples: Salladh-Bar the Arabian necromancer, Baron Von Saponatheim the storyteller, and the Greater Demon Zahnartzt (German for dentist).
Also, L5R has some bad ones, like the Otaku Battle Maidens (retconned out by WotC).
